cut big leaves off or not
could someone please help me with a question, should i cut the big leaves off my plants to allow more light to the buds,or do these leaves feed the buds to make them grow.
my friend said you should cut any leaves off that are bigger then the palm of your hand, he calls them sucker leaves and they are drawing energy and nutirients from the plant that the buds need to produse bigger more potent bud. i have also heard you should never cut off the leaves because they produse vital sugars for bud maturity. so could someone please explaine to me whats right and whats wrong thanks in advance Last edited by hexie114; 06-27-2009 at 11:32 AM. |

when the plant is almost finished, it will draw out the resources stored in the leaves and they will turn yellow, so those yellow leaves are no longer needed you should remove them.
any leaf that is green and healthy looking and getting good light is working to make food for the plant, so dont cut it off. leaves that are in the shade and not receiving good light might be taking a little more energy than they are making. so in a really dense bushy plant for example, the underneath and inside fan leaves are not really doing any good. better to remove them for good airflow so you dont get areas of high humidity that can invite a mold attack. keep in mind that pruning the plant during flowering can slow down the bud growth if you chop a whole lot of stuff off at once, because the plant has to put some energy into healing all those little wounds. so any leaf removal should be either before flowering starts or shortly before harvest, and dont go crazy.

Good luck.
I only trim when I'm having an issue. And the bottom leaves and branches are what gets lopped. |

i bought 5 seeds they all germinated but one of the plants is only half the size as the other 4, they are all the same variety (Humboldt CH9 x Jack 33 ) thay are all feminised so its not a mail. so any thoughts on why its so short taking in account they are all in the same soil and have been broght up on 600 watt flowering bulb and same neuts xlbud
P.S. has anyone tried this strain before or heard of it Last edited by hexie114; 07-02-2009 at 08:55 AM. |

Number of possibilities- a stray grain of pollen wafted in, genetic mutation, it got a double dose of a normally recessive gene, damage to the root system early on, or it's just a runt!

Looks cool.
What strain is that? They seem quite stretchy. Might be that higher light levels keep them squatter. Edit- CH9 Jack- ind/sat cross?

The only thing id change if it were my grow is how tall your plants are... I know that 600w is a powerful light but according to the light chart the most lumens are closest to the light so the bottom of your plants may be a bit fluffy but all in all for a first grow... Good job!
Id love to see some pics of the fullgrown plant... Do you have fans and stuff? Also you might want to check out some stuff online about suppercropping and the low stress technique congrats |

thanks for taking an interest sirsmokealot989 (phuee that tuck sum typing) can i call you smokey for short. yes i do have a fan and some more pics and a couple of questions too.
the first pic is of my biggest bud it still has three more weeks to go, this is going by the instructions that were on the site were i purchased the seeds, yield 80 grams indoor with 30-45 days veg 7-8 weeks flowering time.i gave them the full 45 days veg as they were growing from seed. all the other plants buds are only half the size dose this mean that the others will catch up or are they just not as strong as their sister or is there something i can do to help the girls along. and looking at the pics do you think its possible to get the full 80 grams off all or any of the girls. the next pic is my grow room and fan, you may notice from earlier pics that i have since painted the full room white i have added an extraction fan, and i must confess i only added the upright fan at this point too. this was all done at day 52 one week into flowering, this is when i also cut alot of the big leaves off 3 of my plants, this was before i started this post and found out what a nob i've been for doing that but i bet its not my last mistake being a complette newbee at this new hobby.you can also see the girls together not sure if you can make out the smallest plant supported on a stool in an attempt to get her closer to the light. i've named her carol after an ex, she is small but fiery and a pain in the arse. these next pics are the new batch of cuttings i've taken from the girls a few days before i put them into flower.some have already died off sadly and a couple more look dead but still have green stems.carol looked like a lost cause when she was a seedling but stubun little twat came back and dose have bud growing on her stumpy little legs (branches) so i'll see what happens.i understand they are quite hardy plants in general, my friend says quote " its because they are weeds, and you know how difficult they are to kill you chop them down and they just grow back". a good few of them do look very impressive, though i do say so myself i wonder if i should cut them down when i pot them on to let the shorter ones catch up please let me know what your thoughs on this subject are.
