Because then the U.S. government will have to own up as to why hemp was banned in the first place, besides the fact that the DEA justifies their huge budget by yanking tons of feral ditchweed (AKA non-psychoactive industrial hemp) and calling it a success on the war on drugs, no one has admitted they were wrong since the repeal of prohibition in the government and I'm sure they're not going to start now.

not economically viable to grow crops for electricity? ever heard of a country called Brazil?
Brazil is completely self sufficient when it comes to energy usage (and i'm talking 100% they run their country on renewable fuels). While it is true that corn is pretty much the stupidest crop with which to make ethanol (for various reasons), there are other crops that can produce way more energy way more cheaply. In Brazil, they grow sugar cane. It works for them because of the hot temperatures year round (they can constantly harvest sugar cane all year). While sugar cane may not work in a more temperate climate like that of the US, the point is that there are DEFINITELY ways to produce cheap, renewable energy if a nation truly commits to it.

i dont like the idea of growing corn for fuel. farmers, being humans, itch to have more money in there pocket, and corn nowadays sells for more than other commercial crops. and so farmers are starting to grow corn, instead of wheat, and others, and so prices are rising.

An interesting stat I heard is that growing biofuels uses ridiculous amounts of water. Thats usually one of the things naysayers complain about with oil shale. Something like 24 barrels of water for ever 1 barrel of oil equivalent.
