The music scene is alive and well in Portland, however 90% of the hippies are concentrated in the Eugene / Sweet Home area which is 2+ hours to the south. I imagine there is music in Eugene as well but I have only been there a few times so I can't say for sure. There is always an abundance of herb in either place.
If you are a student here you might be ok but several counties have over 15% unemployment right now.

I live in Eugene, Oregon. Let me tell you, best... place... ever. Since moving here I've made absolutely tons of friends, had tons of good times and formed tons of memories (that I'll probably never remember). The music scene in both Portland and Eugene is really awesome. Perhaps I'm biased but I've been a lot of places and Eugene is definitely my favorite in the United States. For a very friendly, laid back and smoke friendly environment I'd definitely head to Eugene. The herb here is absolutely excellent, some of the best in the country. I've smoked everywhere from NYC to Long Beach, California, where I've spent most of my years. If you find good connects in Eugene, you'll definitely get California medical marijuana quality herb at 35-40 an eighth instead of Southern California's 50-70 an eighth.
I've told my amazing roommates, now best friends, that Eugene is the first city that has felt more like home than home has and aside from traveling I think I'm here to stay. The college is outstanding, the people are amazing and varied, the herb is phenomenal and the scenery is breath taking. Come visit us and see for yourself why Eugene is so awe inspiring and rad.

If there are no jobs and weed costs $300/oz, where's the good times (unless you're a hot chick) ?

That whole "no jobs" thing is pretty bogus. Take a look at Eugene's crraigslist and gander over to the jobs category. While there certainly aren't as many jobs out there as there may have been a few years ago, there is still plenty of work to be done. Besides, in this age of internetic wizardry, location doesn't need to have anything to do with making money. I make the majority of my income online as a freelance writer but aside from that there are tons of legit opportunities out there if ya just look hard enough and sift through all the bullshit. Also, it's entirely possible to get really good ounces for anywhere from $240 to $280. I can assure you that when cannabis becomes legal in the United States, Eugene will be one of the first cities to truly embrace it.

Wow, how come there is 24% unemployment in Detroit? Bunch of lazy ex auto workers, I bet.
Could you share some of those groovy internet jobs you ran across?
Thanks.

There's millions of 'em. Just grab one out of the sky and make sick money.
Send me $25 (cash) and I'll show you.
Or you can ask Sweet Matt.

My kind of place. Lol.
And I saw Portland gets like 5 days of snow in the winter. I'm very down with that idea.
