Behind a large window in my cabana, I watch it rain for hours.
The "medicine plant" allows me to feel a closer experience to nature and
to the many, many plants that surround me here. It rains for 2 or 3
days and breaks for a couple of hours.....then rains again. I am at
the center of one of the last rain forest, the southern coastline of Chile.
Its beautiful what RAIN can produce. Lots of fruit and vegetables. And abundance of seafood. It is very cheap to eat and reside fantastically here.

One problem is finding the plant. So difficult to score.
The law in Chile puts marijuana together with cocaine. Somehow,
they classified the "plant" with harmful narcotics, like cocaine.

That's crazy how they consider it just as hard of a drug as other drugs, it shouldn't be considered a drug at all just a medicine in my mind.

I think I read your post in the Introduction forum, have you managed to get some seeds or clones? I think that's your best option.

Be careful, Chile could be on the DEA payroll that dictates to many S.American countries.
HOWEVER..I want to know how cheap to live. $50/week? $150/week? What about crime, killer insects,snakes,etc. Any information would be well appreciated. Thanx.

How cheap is it to live in Chile?
I live on an acre, that is located on a point, bordering the coastline of the Pacific Ocean in Chile. We have a large 1 bedroom 2 story cabana (furnished house) and pay $225.00 a month, oceanfront property with ocean views.. Its a fishing village and a 15 lb whole Sierra fish cost under $2.00. Great solid white meat.
A kilo of clams or mussels are under$2.00. And the fruit and vegetables are also very
inexpensive and VERY fresh. I have paid as little as .10 cents a pound for kiwis.
As for the Chilean woman, they seem to love American guys. And I have never experienced a woman more devoted to their man!!

Has anyone seen the movie called 'Virus'??

The ending tied it all together for me....especially the part where it says that Mother Nature has her own Super Viruses embedded deep in the rain forests all across the planet, (ebola) to protect herself from who other than MAN!

That was the kind of information I have been waiting for, for years. I secretly believed there were little "paradises" like this somewhere on the planet. I am an "baby boomer" that never contributed to the SocialSecurity system here in the USA. I was to busy having fun to work all that much ! Consequently, my monthly check, which I just started to receive at age 62, is only $661 a month. According to your information, I could live well on that small amount. (I also have savings).
Please continue to stay in this forum, as I have questions as to how many months I could stay on a tourist Visa, or longer. Would you b4e willing to help people find contacts to find a place to stay?

Mickey, Its difficult to make money here. That why food and housing is so inexpensive.
We travel 800 miles to the north of Chile and by large amounts of almonds, walnuts, peanuts, and raisins, where they are grown. Then we bring them back with us, by bus, back to the south of Chile. We mix them together and bag them in a clear plastic bag and bring the trail mix to employees of companies, hospitals, and municipal offices. We are adding coffee and slices of cake to our "catering" menu.
Its fairly difficult to make money here. I am a mailman who retired early with a pension. That makes the difference!
Oh, one can stay here on a tourist visa for 3 months. Then every 3 months you go
over the border to Argentina for lunch and return back to Chile. You are then given
another 3 months.

Hola, Robin Hood.
I am considering Chile as a place I want to experience soon.
As you know the USA has a bad reputation as far as killing and torturing civilian populations, such as 1,000,000 Iraqis. It has also ravaged south and central America for many generations so that it's corporations may steal oil and other resources thru US sponsored dictatorships. Remember please, these are not representative of the people of the USA, but the government, run by these corporations, that create the
suffering. With all that said, how will Americans be welcome in your town? Also is there much crime where you live? We hear of many kidnappings in parts of South America.
I hope I do not ask too many questions for you. One last....how many people live in your town ?

I live in Hawaii, a very beautiful place, as I'm sure Chile is. However, almost everything we consume is imported, (do to a very complicated set of circumstances) and thus the cost of living here is very high when compared to other places in the country and world (like as you make Chile seem). There is a small, but growing 'grassroots' movement to promote agricultural sustainability and independence here. When i think of south American agriculture i think of Pablo Neruda's La United Fruit Co. i find it interesting and encouraging that the situation you describe is so very positive. Based on what you see, what policies and actions promote such a functioning and flowering (local) food industry?

Hey 420. Hawaii is beautiful. I had lived in Hana 2001. Loved it. Not much to do
and not that much rain. As I recall, then, Maui was in a draught. I would expect they
are still suffering a water shortage as many places on our planet are, except here.
It has not stopped raining since I posted last week. It has stopped for 3 or 4 hours then takes off! My goal was to "Go to the Source". A lot of what I have read for years outlined the importance of going to the source. So when I got free of work and had raised my children, I then had the opportunity to step out of line and take a chance.
I visited Chile in 2006, climbing and filming volcano Orsorno. Then visited the island
of Chiloe just to the south of Chile's mainland. I was amazed at the large amounts of
different fish that were available. Believing the Salmon knew the "direction", I followed. The fish where drawn to the source as I was. Then everything fell into place. The vegetables and fruit also were happy being near the source. Looking back,
my life then began to shift. I was struggling to break away from the material world
in California and chose to live in a place where nature is master, not $. Life now is
unfolding. Though, its sad to see so many of the people here are following the western ways and the endless wish for MORE...
One of the pleasing characteristics of Chile is just about everyone here breaks for
their mid day meal at 2pm and shops are closed till 4pm. I like that. Food is
sacred. There is much importance put on the meal and resting ones body
afterwards. A bit like Europe.

Note: When referring to the "Source" I am referring to clean, fresh, water
and the replenishing of fresh rain that is necessary for the re-birthing of life.

I have never experienced tap water to be so pure in my life. After drinking
filtered and bottle water for over 20 years it is a miracle to find a constant
source of fresh, delicious, pure water. Pure water....almost a new word.

ah, it seems that you have truly found a place you can call home =). interestingly enough, the city i'm from receives about 130 inches of rain a year, and the largest export by far from the big island is bottled water. actually, we have chlorine in LOWER then federally mandated levels due to our naturally pure and clean water
