a couple questions on gender
hey folks,
i am thinking about starting about 10 more plants, but i have very little space for them, so i have 2 quick questions. how big would the average, bagseed plant be before you could tell if it is male or female? im thinking i will start them into flowering in only a month or 2 roughly, so... how big do you think? and also, how big of a container for growing will this require? i will be able to transplant bigger once i find out geneder, ad i will have more space from taking out the males, but how big of a container should it take to get to this point? |

Once the plants are 6 inches high and have a few leaves, you can turn back the light on them to 12/12. Within a week to 10 days you should be able to easily see females and males.Kill the males and turn the light on 18/6 on the females and they will resume growing.

I agree
Yes, I must concur with Slunt, force them.
If you are lacking room, you can even skip the reveg. I have forced starting as young as 3 weeks, and then 10-12 days after switching them, discarded the males and left them to flower. Oh wait, I am doing that to 8 of them right now. Daniel ![]()

ok, sounds good, i think thats what i will do. but, what will my yield look like per plant if i do this, with or without the reveg.? and if i do the reveg, is there anything i should do different, like fertelize?....... which brings me onto another whole subject...
I am on one of the tightest of budgets for this grow, and quite frankly, its really just an expirament for this summer, when i will just be starting them inside and moving them out as i will have the room, and conditions required... so without getting to extravagant with my wallet, what could i pick up for some fert? i hear miracle grow is terrible, but i would like something along those lines (certainly not something terrible, but something of the sort, that would work)... i understand that i will need different fertelizer for vegging ang flowering, and i know mirecle grow has a blooming formula... but... any specific brand names in the u.s.a. that would be better fitting for bud growth? thanks for the help bros... my first sprout has poped up nice and healthy, and ive got a few more on the way... maybe some pics soon. |

Cheap chems

and Plant Prod 15-30-15 for flower Mainly like 4$ each container at Wal-Mart or anywhere with a small garden center and they'll do ya a year easy. Use it at half the vegetable garden strength, and about every 4th or 5th watering toss in a touch of epson salts for magnesium if you have some laying around. Daniel

alright, thanks dan, ill pick those up. but when should i start fertelizing? because i hear it can be bad for the plant if i start to early. also, my space is about 2 feet by 4 feet. how mang plants should this be adequate for? i would also like to keep them short since i am using flouros and cfl's for this grow, so i will probaly be doing some LST. so... how many should i start do you think?
also... what should i ecpect for a yield if i do that early flowering strategy to get rid of the males? and would the reveg be worth it? would it give me much extra of a yield? thanks for the help -Jimbo |

... picked up another 150 watt output cfl today. they are coming along nice. but one of em is seeming to form the lil male pods instead of pistils. but then again, its hard to tell, its only about a week and a half old, working on its 5th set of leaves, but it does seem to have lil pods instead of pistils even tho they are very small........ could it be possible to determin sex this early? or should i let it develop more before trashing it?

The height of the plants are not really a good indicator of when you can sex the plants, since under poor conditions(low light) a seedling could get a foot tall in a couple of weeks.
Generally, you would vege the seedlings for 4 weeks minimum. Your plants should be in 2 litre pots at least through out that stage. Initiate budding cycle after the 4th week...and from then, within two weeks you should be able to see which are males and which are females. From there, either continue budding the females, or re-vege them so they get larger, and or take clones from them(mothers). Naturally you ditch the males, or if adventurous, save the best male(isolated on window ledge etc/average light is ok)...then pollinate the best female when the time comes for good seeds which will last for years. Your bag seed maybe very good, only time will tell. Of course, once you find which are the females...you will want to pot the plants up, to 5 litre to 7 litre pots. Organic ferts are best, water soluable products might be best in your situation. Free the herb |
