Finding outdoor spots
I have a few spots in mind. I'm just wondering how you usually go about finding the general location for your plots. keeping in mind security and sunlight and how much of a walk/hike/drive are you willing to go? I'm just looking for informaiton to give me some ideas on looking for a spot.

i've grown in a few outdoor spots, and gotten harvests at all but one of them. I can't wait for spring!!!
-choose a spot that you can easily visit everyday -make sure there is a source of clean water nearby, if you are growing in pots -the plants should be in direct sunlight for at least 6 hours everyday -put chicken wire around your plot, to keep animals away -don't tell ANYBODY. make sure there is no visible path to your plot. happy growing!

i ve been looking for a spot myself.
One is about half hr from my house and deep in the woods. Nice location, stealthy and with good soil. Problem is, that i will need to go at least once a week during the summer (to water) and its kinda far. Second : i m concerned that someone might see me driving in the woods every week and they might get supsicious. Theres another mountain about 15 minutes way from my house.I need to check that one as well. I d rather find a spot that i could go with my bicycle or walk the dog to it. this way you look less supsicious. |

Nice post X263. I'd add on there try to have a reason for being out in the bush, a dog is handy (but don't let it shit or piss near your plot, a meat eaters excrement is no good for soil) as an excuse for long walks.
Alternatively just vary up your pattern, if you're driving don't park in the same spot to begin your trek, take different routes to your plots etc etc. Outdoors, around me at least, you are probably more likely to be ripped than to have the heat sniffing round. !!And keep your plots litter free!!

Thanks for the replies, Most of that I knew but is still helpful. I mwant more like how do yo go about finding them? do you just hop in your car and drive around to forests and look around. Thats what I'll end up doing. I found a realyl nice spot with as much sunlight as possible but security is a factor there.

I always look for a place to plant seeds near home. The problem here is 12 million other people, so privacy is limited.
When I look from my car, I look for an area that is south facing. Take a scooer field. A square box. If I were to plant on the south side of the tree lined field, the treeline would block out the full sun, and even thought he plants would grow, they would be shorter and less productive. The last place I planted was in an alley near work. Since I was in the alley most of the time waiting for the next delivery, I noticed that the buildings started blocking full sun around 2pm except for this small area where the sun baked it until well past 5pm. They grew, but the street light prevented flowering as it was on at night. If you cross some train tracks, the area that will most likely get the most full sunlight will be the northeast corner of the track/street intersection. You might be lucky to find a well hidden spot like the one in the alley that will be close to home if not in your neighbors yard. Suggestions: Look for an open field or grotto and plant along the northern boundry. North east corner of any intersection Tree tops Roof tops Cemetaries are ok if you don't mind the zombie references Parking lot borders State and federal parks Good Luck 40 days and nights and counting.....

Tree top: can be complicated. I've come up with many ideas on this, most of the tress were I live are are 30-100 feet so climbing up them is hard. if yuo could cut the top off and make a plant form that would be amazing. roof tops: been there, got caught by my parents, I'm suprised that they weren't that mad. Cemetaries eh, good one although if your seen with a shovel in a cemetary thats no good. Its probbaly best to leave the dead alone, although I bet there are many cemetaries with good growing conditions. Intersectoins? okay some os goinf to see a plant at an intersection, maybe the side of high ways but not intersections, or maybe I understood wrong.

I'm thinking about growing outside this season.
I have a few places in mind. The sunny bank of a river, not sure if there is enough sunlight though, and this area is pretty close to places people will be. Water retention centre. Its an area to slow the run off of water from the streets before it goes into the marsh, wet, but lots of weeds grow in there. Drainage area for farmers fields. Surrounded by many streams, I could find any number of always sunny areas in the middle of grassy flats. Lots of deer here, and would need to clear grass. Possibly found by farmer/town or development peoples or helicopter (not sure if they would care) What type of terrain is absolutly best? I could probably find it. |

In trees:
I think that if you carve a hole in a branch of the tree and just a little soil, the plant will grow and feed on the tree. In the forest: There's plenty of time to find a good spot. If you get a sunny day off of work/school, go to the forest when the leaves come in at 9,11,2pm, and 5pm. Find a few sunny spots at 9, plant a stick at each spot. Go back at 11. If the stick is still in the sun, come back again at 2. If the stick is not in the sun, move the stick to a sunny spot and come back in a few hours. You might get lucky and find a well hidden spot deep in a dense forest where the sun shines direct for 5 to 7 hours a day. I found another good spot, but it's real close to the watering hole of the towns police officers. There may also be a street light problem. I have my one good area, and a few close to home for the bag seeds. Good Luck,'

on top of trees huh?
funny that you mentioned. theres an area in the south of this country, famous for their outdoor skunk. You can even find the variety in amsterdam named "kalamata" (rare sativa). To make a long story short, the local farmers have adopted a growing technique on top of trees, since cops were constantly busting their fields. I think i saw a similar thread on OG once. They had the pots attached on pulleys and ropes. |

You could also use mosquito netting. It comes in green too. If the plants in the area are tall enough, the netting should be invisilbe from a distance. Like plant the seeds, and cover with netting until the plants are tall enough so the loss of a leaf or three won't stunt it's growth.
I'm way behind on getting prepared. I have the spot, seeds, and work tools, but the area hasn't been cleaned and prepared for gardening. It's a wild place, and the plants own the hillside. I am going to do this GPS thing and plant many areas with only one seed hoping for some seedless bud. I also have some good seeds I got from a dealer, and I will be making seeds too. And lets not forget about the meteorite fertilizer I'm going to try. I'm going to have "monster plants" this year! When/IF I get photos, I'll post them, but most like not until a few minutes before harvest to keep the location from identification. Have a great day! William

I would be more worried about the derr eating my plants then being ran over by one, if yuo make enough noise coming in the deer should be scared off.

How bout worrying about what eats the deer coming down the path.We have lots of cougars and some wolves to worry about.Bears make their own paths. You should scout out your sight now and prepare it by cutting down trees that will block your sun and by clearing bushes. That way in the spring there will be no noticable tear downs in the new spring green. It is also easier to move through the undergrowth and transport equipment in.I put my plants in big 2x3x2 foot rubbermaid containers.I can move them around to follow the sun or move them away if there becomes a security problem. Also when the plants get 3 feet tall, I dig a 3 foot deep pit and lower the container into it.That way a 6 foot plant only sticks up above the ground 3 feet, with all the top buds getting plenty of sun. |
