I have decided that this year I'll make my first real attempt at growing. In thcbuz's Outdoor 101 sticky, he mentioned that you should select a site that is not near pine trees, because they make the soil too acidic. My family has twenty heavily wooded acres, and since I'm in east Texas, it's pretty much all pine. There's plenty of good spots to grow if it weren't for those pine trees. In all the places where there are no pine trees, my plants would easily be found.
So, what should I do to make those pine-infested areas more suitable for growing? Should I dig a big hole and fill it with dirt from an area without pine trees? Or is there something I could add to the soil? Keep in mind that I'm po', so I can't be buying all kinds of fancy expensive soil additives...

Oh. That seems simple enough.
However, is there a way to do it without spending any money? Like adding waste products like egg shells or corn husks or coffee grounds or something?

you could grow in pots but in the ground is better.
Also is it just pine trees that produce acidic soil or is it all sorts of evergreens? I have the same problemn myslef altohugh most of the trees are different sorts of cedar and furs and whatnot.

Fairly easy to take care of,but it requires sweat, not money.
Dig a hole in an area that will get constant sunshine(East to West)all summer, yet hidden by the pines. The hole should be about 3 foot square and the deeper the better, but at least 3 deep.Line the hole with a cut open garbage bag which leaves the bottom of the hole uncovered. Now go to any local farm field and dig up the same volume of soil you just removed from the pine soil area.I use a big garbage can and a wheelbarrow to move the soil.Transport this soil to your hole and pour in and lightly pack down. The garbage bags will help prevent leaching of acids into your soil from the outside area. Each of these holes will sustain 2 or 3 plants. The better the soil, the better the results. |

Yeah, I think I'll try that.
