Vegetarianism

Do you practice this? or something similar? What is your philosophy on the way you eat.. and why?

yep, veganism....

started when I learned the details about where meat comes from as a young child....flip flopped but started again in college...been veg/vegan for over 10 years, strictly...

TO ME... not only are dead animal bodies gross and infectious, but i believe that living this way (carnivorous) brings bad karma, health complications, fitness implications, and has a big effect on the consciousness toward anger, aggression, and irrationality...

after studying eastern religions, i have had many profound and intense experiences--some astral--through the processes of meditation and purification--including dietary--that assured i would never go back. vegetarianism, to me, helps one toward more favorable conditions and living in this life as well as beyond this one.

Didn't we just do this thread?

Yes - Lacto/Ovo Vegetarian for 20 years now, but not-militant. It's a personal choice.

WILD WILL: why not militant?? come on man, lets get strapped up with the latest high tech, kill off all the meat eaters, and create our own advanced vegetopia. We will overgrow the planet with the fruits and veggies fertilized by their blood and celebrate with the animals over their demise! GOOD RIDDENZ!!!

My philosophy on eating is simple.

Good taste + needed nutrients = time to eat

vegetarian on and off for about 3 and a half years. i came into kind of by accident when i challenged myself to do it for a month so i could learn how to cook some vegetarian food. after being vegetarian the second time it became obvious to me that the diets are pretty much similar with the exception of where the protein comes from.

my philosophy about food is that the less energy required to grow and bring the food to me, the better. its much easier to do this with vegetables. just trying to lessen my environmental impact because where i live i drive a fair amount.

I'm vegetarian. My reason is, meat is a product of cruelty and indifference to that cruelty. Animals raised for food suffer their entire lives. I want no part of this.

you mean besides being caged with far too many other animals, fed byproducts of the same species, branded, gorged to increase fat content, blah blah blah, and then killed violently?

I'm not sure how animals raised for slaughter DON'T suffer. Unless you want to make the argument that since I'm not a chicken or a cow I don't know if they truly suffer or not.

I agree that there is a lot of suffering but at the same time there are animals that don't suffer. And no I will not make that argument.. but what I will ask is.. does the average animal that will be consumed by humans suffer more than the average human?

Also.. what about those animals which have relatively free existences down on the farm with ample space to move around and good quality food..? I know this is probably a rarity.. but it is getting lesson uncommon again.

And finally.. if you knew there was little to no suffering for the animals.. would you then eat meat?

i switch back and forth. i suspect the line between vegetarian and omnivore is not as neatly drawn as most people would believe.

I guess I am by nature a violent bastard who cannot live without the slaughter of animals, but I'm also okay with it for now.

We stayed with friends a few years back who are strict vegans, after three days I found myself needing to hunt. It was only a rabbit, but I caught and killed it, then prepared it on an open fire a fair distance from their house.

Just cant live without a feed of flesh oocasionally, flesh soothes the beast within.

how in the world did you catch a rabbit? are you aware that the biochems (endorphins, adrenaline) you are ingesting from a terrified struggling animal are highly addictive. thats the same stuff the evil secret-society-enclaved rulers of the world get when they drink blood from human sacrifices...thats the same stuff that turned THEM to the dark side.

if you do ever want to ween yourself off of the crimson kool-aid then just use milk in one or more of several forms--it is a form of cows blood transformed, and it is a MORE civilized way to take the biochemicals your body may not make properly due to being long depressed by your consumption of them. in time your own body's molecular machinery will kick back on fully and you can be self-fulfilled.

JVB, mate, the bovine lactose industry is just as guilty of cruelty as the beef industry.

I imagine any vegan recommending milk products to be somewhat confused.

I think you'd be hard pressed to find animals being raised for butchering who aren't in some sort of suffering.

Relativism in terms of suffering doesn't negate the inherent issue I have with making other creatures suffer for my expense. Yea, all humans suffer. And, frankly, if I was God, I'd cut that shit out as much as possible.
But just because I suffer doesn't mean I want to make other creatures suffer too. I know what suffering is (being human), so why would I wish that on any other sentient beings?

As far as animals on a farm with ample space and good food, yea, that's a rarity. And while this takes away the cruelty argument (except for the actual slaughtering), it still doesn't change the environmental damage, land usage, and food usage needed to raise livestock.

If I knew there was little to no suffering for animals would I eat meat? No. Eating meat, besides being borne out of suffering and torture, is the dietary equivalent of driving an H3 hummer. It's wasteful in a world that can't continue to waste.

But outlawing hummers is wrong, so forcing you to be a veggie is too.
