I'm gonna have to disagree 100%. My philosophy is that if a person wants to be happy they need to completely give a shit.

For example, your house stinks? Light a candle. Your clothes don't fit right? Get them tailored. You're not feeling well? Eat something that's good for you.

Give a shit.... Also, drugs.

But giving a shit just makes you angry/causes pain..... I've been really depressed for the last 7 years of my life.. give or take, and I chalk it all up to caring about what's fucked up in this world.

Especially in moderation.

Happiness is about focus. If you're focused on shit all day, that's how you're going to feel. If you're focused on the good, then that's how you will feel. The problem is, most of us unhappy people are habitually focused on the negative. I think the media, especially in the US, has a hand in this.

^ i agree with the media comment, rev. it seems like they broadcast more and more stories about what you should be fearing as an american. people like my mother buy into that and live with fear of whats lies just out the front door of the house.
i try to tell her that, yes, negativity exists in the world, but we cant be paralyzed by it, and we shouldnt dwell on the negativity, rather we should recognize it for what it is and move on seeking the positive aspects of life.

Not giving a shit sort sounds similiar to the idea that nonattachment to the outcomes of our work will lead to less suffering/expectations.

I don't know if I'd say its the same thing for this thought. It's kind of the apathetic sounding side of the coin, but hey man, whatever works for you.

I agree totally with the Rev though. Having a PMA goes along way in seeing the brighterside when things are less than splendid, and keeps you flexable about what to do with then unexpected......alth ough, not giving a shit is a broad brush stroke.

Perhaps, Don't give a shit with a positive outlook would be good though. I wouldn't phrase myself as a don't give a shit, in my words, but I would say I'm usually whatever if people want me to do something...' sure whatever I'm not up to anything '

The key to happiness is simply rolling with the waves. You are just a leaf floating in the breeze and you have little control of what you are doing. Try as you might you cannot change your path as dramatically as you wish. If you just realize that there are things you can control and things you cant, you will be happy. Just roll with the punches, and do what little you can.

Dont just tune shit out completely. I tuned out all negative aspects in my life and it did get rid of my depression/thoughts of suicide but now my life hasn't moved in the direction i want and i can feel a wave of depression coming on like never before.

So i guess what i'm saying is its ok to be apathetic, just don't try to tune out the negative completely. Its like the AA thing, however it goes. Feel satisfaction by working to fix what you can, and accept what you can not fix.

do you mask feeling under 'happiness'/drugs....or are you truly happy...

Nothing will ever feel right if you can't be first be honest with what's really going on, big picture and smalll...

i know exactly where you're coming from, I spent too many years giving a shit and it really holds you back in life. to have freedom is to not give a shit at all.
