BC Mess - Who Should Play in the Championship Game?

Wow! What a day for college football? So who is going to play in the Sugar Bowl for the National Championship? I say give Hawaii a shot if they beat Washington. Personally I hate the BCS and would prefer a playoff system.

I pick: Hawaii (If they are undefeated) & Oklahoma to play

Hawaii because they are undefeated, Oklahoma because they would be #1 if their quarterback didn't get hurt and plus they knocked off the #1 team today.

Hawaii coach June Jones wanted his football team to open the season at Michigan. The Wolverines wouldn’t play the Warriors and instead hosted Division I-AA Appalachian State, which beat Michigan 34-32 in one of the biggest upsets in college football history.

Hawaii was scheduled to play Michigan State this season, but the Spartans paid $250,000 to cancel the game. Jones tried to replace the Spartans with Southern California, but even the Trojans wanted no part of quarterback Colt Brennan and the Warriors’ high-octane offense.

“We offered to play everybody,” Jones said. “No one wanted to play us.”

You can't blame Hawaii that the teams in their division sucked and no decent team wanted to play them. No one gave Boise State a shot to beat Oklahoma in the last Fiesta Bowl, but they did.

Hawaii took care of business and now is entittled to play for the Championship.

Hawaii will never compete in the bcs championship game until a playoff is instituted... An undefeated record does not guarantee a trip to the national championship... Strength of schedule and the coaches polls are just as much determining factors as is the overall record...

The national championship will most likely be between LSU and OSU or Oklahoma...

Ohio State moved from No. 5 to No. 3 last week by not playing. It's possible the Buckeyes will move from No. 3 to No. 1 this week by not playing. The Buckeyes might be hoping not to play Jan. 7 in order to win the national championship.

How's that for a scewed up system? We need a playoff.

That's what the BCS decided, too. ESPN - LSU takes the second spot in BCS, will face Ohio St. - College Football

So many teams have legit arguments to be there, IMO. I think the Big 10 needs a conference championship, it's fucked up that OSU can move that far up in the polls without doing anything. I read that there is going to be a 50 day span between their last game and the championship.

LSU has the two 'best' losses out of anyone, i'd say. Both triple OT and in the toughest conference.

Here's what I don't understand. Yes LSU beat Virginia Tech in week 2 of the year. However, both VT and LSU are much different teams now than they were early in the season. VT has gotten much better, LSU is not nearly as dominant as they were earlier in the season. All things taken into consideration, the Hokies entered the final weekend ranked AHEAD of LSU in the BCS poll. The Hokies played #11 Boston College in the ACC championship game, and beat them decisively. LSU played #14 Tennessee, and squeaked out a win. So VT entered the week ranked in front of LSU ... played a higher ranked opponent than LSU did ... beat their higher ranked opponent by more points than LSU beat their lower ranked opponent ... and yet LSU jumps Virginia Tech and all the other teams to get into the BCS championship game? Absolutely bogus.

How the heck can you play a worse team, barely beat them, and jump the team in front of you who played a tougher team and beat them by more points? The voters really screwed the pooch this year.

going by that, Oklahoma deserves it more than both LSU & VT. Oklahoma not only beat the #1 team in the country, they dominated them.

But saying VT deserved it more than LSU is ridiculous. LSU laid a whooping on them. No matter if it was at the beginning of the season or not, LSU dominated VT.

The fucking WAC is just as it sounds... next year though.
Also next year Washington will be a big competitor(sp?).
That QB they have is amazing and are attempting to build a team around him. I'm pretty sure he's a fresh. or soph

The theory behind the BCS system is that every week is a playoff. Therefore, Hawaii should be handed the championship trophy. If it were double elimination, OSU should play Kansas and the winner should play Hawaii. No 2 loss team should even be considered.

Yeah, I agree. If Hawaii wins their game they have a legit argument for being national champs. Hawaii can't help other teams dont want to play them. And also can't help if the other teams in their conference suck.

I'm saying they shouldn't even have to play any game. The regular season is supposedly the playoff system for the BCS. Since no other team ended up undefeated, the playoff is over.

It really doesn't work that way, it is a much more complicated formula. Strength of schedule is added in, coaches poll, some other poll (i think they got rid of AP and ones that include margins of victory).

More complicated? How does once beaten Kansas, which met the criteria to be ranked #1, completely drop out of the picture by loosing to a top 5 team that eventually was ranked #1. Yet an LSU team, which lost TWICE to teams ranked lower than the team Kansas lost to, is playing for the championship.

Kansas, a one loss team, had a very easy schedule much like Hawaii. But unlike Hawaii they had the chance to confirm their rank. They didn't. They played a ranked team and were beaten....Eliminated (schedule).

Oklahoma at two losses has a bigger argument than both UH and KU. They won the Big 12 and thrased the #1 team in the country. But they lost to two unranked teams, including Colorado. And with that CU loss....Eliminated (teams they loss to).

LSU won the SEC and went through a very difficult schedule. They lost to Kentucky and Arkansas both in triple OT. If there is such a thing as a good loss, those were it. Kentucky was, at the time, a high ranked team and Arkansas has a leading Heisman Trophy candidate.

That's why LSU is playing for the National Championship.

The fact that Kansas made it to #1 in the BCS rankings means there schedule must have been good enough. To say they didn't hold their rank is true. They didn't hold it against an eventual 11-2 team. LSU failed to hold their rank TWICE, and against teams that ended up 7-5 and 8-4.
