A Wise Man Once Told Me Something Much More Profound Than This

It is said there is nothing, Beyond what we see;
But perhaps if we listen, We perceive.

And you’ve got to indicate to the people who run it, to the people who own it, that unless you’re free, the machine will be prevented from working at all!

the first line sounds pretty familiar, i guess the second one is their own addition to the saying? I keep getting it jumbled in my head when i try and pick it apart, it seems to me the first verse means that only the things we're aware of "exist" to us, however the second confuddles me a bit. Sure i can see it saying to basically pay more attention, to at least expand what little it is we know, and consequently what "exists" in our perspective, but listening and seeing both seem like passive, observational senses.

what is it that makes hearing expand ones concious more rapidly than seeing it? is it because the eyes are know to play optical illusions? or is it less literal, conveying eyes as only being able to show us whats directly infront of us?
