Ok, I'm working on the same device, only using a trumpet mouthpiece and a toilet paper roll. I'll post a picture and more instructions when I have it ready. Oh, I was wondering, exactly how dangerous is it to breathe through the plastic? Is it worse for your lungs than ganja?

I did it!!! I just finished with the new design, (no plastic), but I'm really fuckin tired, so I'll post instructions tomorrow. Oh, should I just add them in a post, or delete the instructions from first design?

Ok, after getting some flak about using a plastic tube, I came up with this alternative. It is a bit harder to make than the film canister version, but this one just exposes the smoke to paper and metal.

Materials:

1 empty toilet paper tube
a few sheets of paper (depends on thickness of paper)
flat cardboard
metal tube the same width as your usual joint (I used a trumpet mouthpiece)
scotch tape
glue stick
scissors
pencil
rubber band
tissue
rubber band
x-acto knife

Step 1: Cut one or 2 pieces of paper into strips about 1 inch in width. Wrap one strip around the TP tube and tape the strip to itself once you finish wrapping it around. This should wrapped around tight enough that you can't really see any space in between it and the TP tube, but it should still slide along the tube. Now, take another strip and tape one end of it to the previous strip. Wrap this around the first strip and tape it to itself when it is all the way wrapped around. Continue wrapping strips around each other until you have a band of strips like 1/8th of an inch thick. The TP tube should nest perfectly inside of the paper band.

IMPORTANT!!! The paper band should have one end on which all the strips are lined up perfectly. Just make sure of this. You will see why it is important in a minute.

Step 2: Take the paper band off of the TP tube and trace one end of the TP tube onto the cardboard. Cut the traced circle out of the cardboard with the x-acto knife. If you did this perfectly, it will have the exact same diameter as the TP tube and will fit inside the paper band. Now trace another circle around the paper band onto the cardboard and cut this one out as well. If you did this perfectly, this one will have the same diameter as the paper band.

Step 3: Find the center of both cardboard circles. Cut a hole in the center of both circles. The hole should have a diameter slightly less than that of the metal tube. Slide the bigger cardboard circle about halfway down the metal tube. Next, slide the smaller cardboard circle onto the metal tube also, so that there is about 1/4 inch between it and the bigger circle.

Step 4: Using the glue stick, put glue around the edge of the smaller cardboard circle. Next, put glue on the end of the paper band that has all the strips lined up perfectly. Now we come to the hardest part. You should have the metal tube going through both cardboard circles. Take it and put it into the paper band so that the smaller cardboard circle is about 1/4 inch into it. That should be as far as you can go, because the bigger circle will be stopped be the paper tube. Make sure both the circles lie flat.

Note: When both of them lie flat and are glued into place, there is a double seal so that smoke can't escape. I know that last step was pretty damn confusing, so if you didn't get it, post your question.

If you managed to follow my insanely complicated instructions, you now have the thing that I am holding in the first 2 pics. Now slide the TP tube into that and put a tissue over the other end and you have the finished product. Take a look at the pictures to see what it should look like.

When you are ready to light up, put the mouth end of the joint into the end of the metal tube so that when you put the pieces together, it will be fully trapped in the tube.

PS: I highly recommend getting a trumpet mouthpiece because not only can they be used for this, but also as part of a homemade bong. They go for about 10 bucks on eBay. Any metal tube will do though.
