PC troubles.

Ok, i have this computer, a compaq presario and its doing some crazy shit i've never seen before. It was working just fine, then I went to plug in a webcam and it shut off. Now, everytime i turn it on XP starts to load it gets half way and shuts off, it reboots by itself loads half way then shuts off, it reboots loads about half way then shuts off. It will keep doing this all day unless i unplug it. WTf could be causing this. Im puzzled as hell.

honestly, it could be anything.

best case scenario: its a software problem and formatting would fix it

worst case scenario: its a hardware problem and you might need to buy a new CPU for example. but in YOUR case, since you have a name brand POS, you might have to get a computer because older compacs/dells have like shit that keeps you from upgrading.

Come on dude wtf are you talking about?
Stay away from this part of the forum since you obviously don't know the first thing about computers.

He has either a problem with a driver or a malfunctioning device, a webcam in his case.

Uninstalling the driver in safe mode (press F8 before booting) and removing the malfunctioning device, should fix the problem.

^^ no N00B!

yeah his malfunctioning webcam is making his comp shut down midboot.

he said he plugged in his webcam, not he searched for some drivers and they made his shit all whack. I'm sure I'm more computer literate than you are stulic so don't get cute with me

re-formatting would be your best bet, but since you didn't consider that as an option you probably aren't too keen on how to do so. hopefully you have your windows xp cd and can either reinstall windows, or get a fresh start by reformatting your HD.

unplug your webcam and restart. if that doesnt work, unplug webcam and do a system restore. if that doesnt work, reformat.

This is exactly what's happening.

So? A malfunctioning device or a corrupt driver. No third option there much less a CPU or a software issue.

Of course you are.

See what a tool you are, only a dumb fucking n00b with NFI would give such a last option advice to someone having a minor configuration problem.

Oh noes! My PC just beeped, I better format my drive!

Why don't you just tell him to buy a new computer and throw the old one away?

Oh wait, you did that in your first post already.

What a tool.

To be fair it might boot but it wouldn't restart at the same point in startup every time.

Let me add my voice to Stulic's, AdmBmb, you should stay the fuck out of this forum unless you're going to tell people shit that isn't retarded. "OH NOES MAH MONITOR CAME UNPLUGD BETTAR FOARMAT"

Stulic is probably correct - windows is likely trying to load a driver that your computer doesn't like as it's booting. It's probably trying to load this driver because when you plug in a USB device like a webcam Windows will automatically find and load the appropriate driver for you. Windows loads these drivers during startup, typically, so during startup is the natural place for your computer to reset if Windows has a problem with one of those drivers.

The *most* drastic measure you should be taking in this situation is running a windows repair - insert your windows CD when you turn the computer on, boot off of it, select the partition where you have windows installed currently and choose the option to repair windows - it's fast, easy, and fixes a variety of problems that will cause your OS to not load. I've seen this exact thing happen a few times, always after a hardware change, and it's almost always fixable by what Stulic's said or what I've suggested here.

oh please you're twice the n00b that stulic is. hey, why don't you suggest to the the thread starter THE EXACT SAME THING i suggested he should do? Oh wait, you just did. In the mean time, would you mind just sticking to your "I'm an oldschool member with an old join date, but no one gives a flying fuck about me" thread that you made? Oh wait, you haven't made it yet.

carry on.

Ya this could be pretty much anything like adm already said. I hate to say I assume you tried unplugging your webcam, but bionic was also trying to play dvd's on his cd-rom.

I'd try it on safemode, and if you're able to get on then, I'd system restore to the date before you tried installing the webcam, worth a try anyway.

Red face

Delay......That's what I'd do! System restore fer sure too.....
Plus I'd unplug my webcam and anything non-essential to make pc boot. Just a keyboard, mouse.........unplug anything external that is not necessary to boot.

Personally I run 98, 'cause I can do what I want with win.com!

Good Luck.......I'm sure it's just a small something!

Hahahahaa

Hey dunce, you've probably never heard of something called Windows XP Recovery CD.
It is used to repair minor damage caused to the operating system.
Usually every bought PC with pre-installed XP gets one of these. If not, the repair option is available on every XP setup disc.

Well, that's what Frodo suggested, as the most drastic measure at that.

Now capitalized for your shallow brain: REPAIR that Frodo suggested and REFORMAT that you suggested, are apples and oranges.

Please stop embarrassing yourself even further especially by calling other people n00bs while you're on the best way to become the motherfucking world champion in n00bishsness, not only in this thread.
