I think for the most part people here are pretty open to it. You get a few people who are legitimately against it and then a decent sized handful of people that are seemingly endlessly amused by gay jokes or so concerned with macho posturing that it they feel the need to belittle people for it.

Most of the time I'm assuming any ribbing about being gay is in good nature though, and is generally taken as such. The only times I even vaguely recall seeing people be shitty to someone for sexual orientation they were told what idiots they were pretty quickly.

Using it out of context and to pick on someone, good natured or not, is still a misusage to me and demeaning to people who call themselves homosexual. I stopped trying to fight nigger/nazi/jew/gay jokes many years ago. No one really seems to care except me. People say it's just a word. That's my piece.

I'm a firm believer in what Carlin said that there are no bad words, only bad intentions or context. Using a word to pick on someone for what is seemingly homosexual behavior whether it be a stereotype or not is not necessarily a misuse to me, it may not be PC or be the route I'd take, but it's not saying anything bad about gay people, nor is it saying anything bad about the person unless you perceive being gay as something insulting.

Granted there is a difference if someone is just yelling out faggot at someone for being an idiot or something similar, but that's to be expected, it is after all the internet which is a playground for people to say shit they wouldn't normally say in public, much less out loud and directed at someone.

I wouldn't say people don't care, but then again I certainly do care, I just don't seem to be as taken aback by it as you do knowing the context I'm assuming it's being used in. Also I fear that when you relegate words to such a position where the mere mention or thought of them is seen as derogatory or hateful then you're giving those words and the people that may still use them much more power than they deserve. Words are simply words and only have the power you impress upon them, and while they may not have a place in everyday conversation, or certain situations or usage, I do believe that the solution isn't in banishing them from the lexicon.
