A pilsner is a type of lager. Pilsner Urquell is the apparent original pilsner and Budweiser is a bastardization of one.

what makes it different from other lagers?
thr taste is very subtle, it is a delicate balance of flavor with notes of sweetness against bitterness, all held together by a walking bass-line of barftastic aromas. ever so slightly soapy.

I really really really thought that lager was darker beer, and pilsner was the lighter (in color and taste) beer.

I used to drink Veltins all the time in Germany, it's actually imo one of the best beers I've ever tried.
