The lifestyle a person cultivates which promotes gaining weight is not one that just suddenly appears overnight. It's gradually formed over a period of time on the foundation of thought processes which have been formed and influenced through upbringing, cultural and social setting, and genetics (to a lesser degree). To say you can 'simply stop' these processes which have essentially become part of your identity is no small feat. I'm obviously not saying it isn't possible, I'm saying it's not as easy as flicking off a light switch.

Of course there are exceptions, like when a very significant and/or traumatic event shocks a person's psyche to the core allowing for a more sudden change... although not always necessarily for the better. You're realization was likely not a result of anything like this, but more of a culmination of a long series of psychological changes that were occurring within you as you got older and went through life.

When I say 'psychological issues' I'm not talking about severe depression or anything clinical, I'm merely referring to those aforementioned thought processes which are allowing for the weight to be gained. All action (or lack thereof) is the manifestation of these processes whether we know it or not, and to not at least understand this correlation leaves you that much more susceptible to a reactive -- not proactive -- life.

Ultimately I'm not saying the responsibility doesn't lie with the person, nor am I saying that it isn't up to them to make the decisions necessary to lose weight... I'm saying that if it were so easy to get to the point of making those decisions, obesity wouldn't be the epidemic (yes, epidemic) that it is.

I have to agree with cerp on this.

The problem is that physical accomplishments aren't properly celebrated in our culture outside the confines of organized sport. Instead of the fat kid being reinforced by his peers so that he may try harder and improve himself, he is belittled to the point of insecurity and eventually apathy towards his physical state.

I became fat during Jr high, about 3 years I was technically obese. One day I looked at myself and said, this isn't gonna be me, and I never turned back.

If I wasn't so naturally awesome, I don't know if I would have been able to do that.

Aye I was fat once too because all I did was eat bacon double cheeseburgers from BK and play video games.

It was a brief period in my life where I actually wanted to gain weight, and gained a considerable amount (in an unhealthy way).

But my personal nature sees that I move around a lot and eat very little.

That is for real. The hardest shit I have ever done in my life (and I've been in demolition, masonry, electrician, general contract work) digging ditches and holes with your hands and a shovel is the single hardest thing I've ever done.

It's a combination of having to meet the quota, ie dig fast, and having to dig so much that fucks you up.

I'd be hard pressed to find something that in the long run would be more exhausting than fucking digging holes. I hated it. With a passion.

Knocking down concrete walls got nothing on digging.

Fuck that shit.

my downfall was the beer, a few years of heavy drinking and my flat stomach went bye-bye. Probably also in combination with my eating habits. Now I am trying to get back into better shape, it's a slow process which I think is why people get discouraged in remaining consistent with a new healthy lifestyle.

i like the part where you explain to waves that nothing is black and white and sad that waves thought it was as easy as putting the fork down.

The rewards are worth it. I should know. I used to be there a few years ago before I started smoking and eating pizzas every few days again. Now I'm thin, but I'm not healthy thin. I look like tight knots of muscles strewn across a skeleton with this giant red cock sticking out of a furry mound of pubes. It's not pretty, it's not pretty.

Goddamn I completely forgot to tell you guys:

Last saturday one of my class mates (through 3 weeks) was murdered by her brother. He owed her money, and he was on some sort of upper. They were allegedly fighting and it escalated to the point where he rammed a knife through her neck, cutting her breathe-a-majig and killed her.

I tell you this last week was fucking weird in class.

Now, question, should the class go to the funeral? There's been talk about it.

Things to mind: We knew her for 3 weeks. This isn't a normal death, it's a family tragedy. We are fucking 24 people or so.

The alternative is to send a bucket, which imho is a much more appropriate gesture.

Thoughts?

Who?

Don:

That is really fucked up. I think it'd definitely be more appropriate for you and your classmates to stay away from the funeral unless you're actually a close friend. That's some fucked up shit to happen, I really doubt her relatives would find it comforting to have this entire, and not well-known group of students show up.

the fact you call her neck a breathe-a-majic tells me to send a bucket, whatever the fuck that means. don't go unless you are truly devastated and want to be a part of a very personal experience with her family.

Not her neck, that fucking pipe that she used to breathe through. What is that called in english please?

wtf is the matter with you people, you've never heard of a bucket of flowers? shit.

I completely agree with the general sentiment btw, flowers are the way to go. It's just to damn personal. I would imagine it being different had we been a class for say 3 years. But 3 weeks? no go.

Exactly. Death is a serious thing man. Whoever first suggested the whole class go is probably some sensationalist, vicariously enthused, dead-inside-no-hope-to-feel-real-love-ever-gonna-die-afraid-and-lonely sort of SICK FUCK a can't even GO ON.

Unless it was you. In which case, all is forgiven.
