Enough Words?

How does a part of the world leave the world?
How can wetness leave water?

Don't try to put out a fire
by throwing on more fire!
Don't wash a wound with blood!

No matter how fast you run,
your shadow more than keeps up.
Sometimes, it's in front!

Only full, overhead sun
diminishes your shadow.

But that shadow has been serving you!
What hurts you, blesses you.
Darkness is your candle.
Your boundaries are your quest.

I can explain this, but it would break
the glass cover on your heart,
and there's no fixing that.

You must have shadow and light source both.
Listen, and lay your head under the tree of awe.

When from that tree, feathers and wings sprout
on you, be quieter than a dove.
Don't open your mouth for even a cooooooo.

When a frog slips into the water, the snake
cannot get it. Then the frog climbs back out
and croaks, and the snake moves toward him again.

Even if the frog learned to hiss, still the snake
would hear through the hiss the information
he needed, the frog voice underneath.

But if the frog could be completely silent,
then the snake would go back to sleeping,
and the frog could reach the barley.

The soul lives there in the silent breath.

And that grain of barley is such that,
when you put it in the ground,
it grows.

Are these enough words,
or shall I squeeze more juice from this?
Who am I, my friend?

The Center of the Fire

No more wine for me!
I'm past delighting in the thick red
and the clear white.

I'm thirsty for my own blood
as it moves into a field of action.

Draw the keenest blade you have
and strike, until the head circles
about the body.

Make a mountain of skulls like that.
Split me apart.

Don't stop at the mouth!
Don't listen to anything I say.
I must enter the center of the fire.

Fire is my child
but I must be consumed
and become fire.

Why is there crackling and smoke?
Because the firewood and the flames
are still talking:
"You are too dense. Go away!"
"You are too wavering. I have solid form."

In the blackness those two friends keep arguing.
Like a wanderer with no face.
Like the most powerful bird in existence
sitting on its perch, refusing to move.

What can I say to someone so curled up with wanting,
so constricted in his love?

Break your pitcher against a rock.
We don't need any longer
to haul pieces of the ocean around.

We must drown, away from heroism,
and descriptions of heroism.

Like a pure spirit lying down, pulling
its body over it, like a bride her husband
for a cover to keep her warm.

to a small place that fits like a nest around him,
someone who wants no more, who's not himself
longed for by anyone else,

The Many Wines

God has given us a dark wine so potent that,
drinking it, we leave the two worlds.

God has put into the form of hashish a power
to deliver the taster from self-consciousness.

God has made sleep so
that it erases every thought.

God made Majnun love Layla so much that
just her dog would cause confusion in him.

There are thousands of wines
that can take over our minds.

Don't think all ecstasies
are the same!

Jesus was lost in his love for God.
His donkey was drunk with barley.

Drink from the presence of saints,
not from those other jars.

Every object, every being,
is a jar full of delight.

Be a connoisseur,
and taste with caution.

Any wine will get you high,
Judge like a king, and choose the purest,

the ones unadulterated with fear,
or some urgency about "what's needed."

Drink the wine that moves you
as a camel moves when it's been untied,
and is just ambling about.

This World Which Is Made Of Our Love For Emptiness

Praise to the emptiness that blanks out existence. Existence:
this place made from our love for that emptiness!
Yet somehow comes emptiness,
this existence goes.
Praise to that happening, over and over!

For years I pulled my own existence out of emptiness.
Then one swoop, one swing of the arm,
that work is over.
Free of who I was, free of presence, free of
dangerous fear, hope,
free of mountainous wanting.

The hear-and-now mountain is a tiny piece of a piece
of straw
blown off into emptiness.

These words I'm saying so much begin to lose meaning:
existence, emptiness, mountain, straw: words
and what they try to say swept
out the window, down the slant of the roof.

No Roach, this wasn't originally English....

I don't believe the wording sequence etc... is wrong, there is some terms like "Friend" that have particular meaning in Sufism, and amongst Rumi's writings.

Sufism is Islam's mystical branch, as you may know.

That means that people can Merge with the Absolute reality, and with in Islam is generally called Allah. Sufis, as part of their practice, recite the 99 names of Allah, that is... the other 98 ones.

The thing I really like about the Sufi's philosophy as I read it, is dualism is the hump essentially, in realization and emptying yourself, seeing that you aren't separate.

Now... don't poke fun please.

Just trying to answer your question.

To me the writings of the Sufi touches a similar way of being that I encounter in Buddhism. That is knowing the Self, and what isn't the Self.

Hope that clear it up, as much as it can....

And secularly, I feel that there is also a human to human way to view and apply interconnectedness and all being part of One reality and the same elements as the cosmos.

In those 5 or so years I attended, we studied many religions.

I never found any answers except the ones I've already expressed (many times)

but yea, it sort of felt eastern.

Werd werd.... As you might know I frequent the local Anglican Church, mostly because it's close not because it's where I wanted to be, necessarily. That is... I know why I am there, it's my intention not the ritual itself perse.

They are very liberal, and thinking is encouraged.... good gawd y'all!

They are also very socially active... And to me, 'knowledge' isn't worth much unless you can take action through it.

There is a lot of cool things the Canadian Anglican Church has done in terms of loosening up the Communion at large...

The Quakers are about the closest thing I sense in protestant Christianity in terms of mysticism. Anglicans and Catholics have meditation and contemplation in their philosophies... but I think the closest thing Christianity has in The Eastern Churches expounding on Theosis, which I talked a little about in the 'Christian Mysticism' Thread I have going on SS.

The Sufis really focus on and use the words 'love' and 'friend' a lot... and I think that is soooooo welcoming. It at least gets the ball rolling in a kind manner and not fear.

I don't know what exactly to add for explanation other than to share some things about Sufism from my own perspective. Knowing their intention or Rumi's in this case, helps a lot I believe in understanding these Poems... which is exactly what they are

Jalāl ad-Dīn Muḥammad Rūmī

There is TONS of metaphor and simile, but all basically are trying to express the dissolving or emptying of the Lower/Impulsive Self. The one that keeps us stuck and separate from our fullest creativity and inter-connection. The aim is always to uncovering and developing the Knowing the Higher Self, then lifting the veils between it and experiencing union w/ and seeing the word through the eyes of the Divine.

Shams reached into the fountain and took out a dry book just to show him. "Leave them" said Rumi.

As the story goes after this Rumi's deep life began, and he said "Today what I thought was God I met today in human form." For those who don't know this history, Shams of Tabriz was a student of Rumi's father, who was a religious scholar and mentor. Upon hearing that Rumi was taking his Father's place in the community in Konya, he came from the desert to instruct Rumi in his Father's way. The metaphor is that Rumi saw the Light of God shining so bright when it was reflected off the perfect mirror, who was Shams. Rumi's beautiful words are to capture this mystic connection to the Light, and to strive to be a more perfect mirror reflecting the Love and Light of God all of the earth. And also to know the feeling of that experience in an ecstatic manner.

Love, Light, Beloved, Friend are words used by Rumi to talk about God.

In my opinion the God of these poems and how we live in and experience the world aren't separate or apart from us. Dualism seems less emphasize or not even a reality at all. The point in all this seem to be to practice being as ultra-aware or 'drunk' with the connection as a means of living.

And speak highly to the intention of living in the here and now, not waiting until we die, but rather walking as close in likeness to the Ways of God and Universe as we can.

Knowing the God within.
