ima prolly be getting a few chickens in a few days, ima start working on the coup once the weather clears up.

anyone personally raise chickens for the eggs or at pets or whatever?

any advice? from what i have read online they are easy to maintain so i am not too worried i am getting on over my head.

also, in new york the winters get kind of cold, would 2 chickens living together in a well insulated coup be able to ride out the winters together? i would really only want to take care of one chicken at first and see how it works but i think 2 is neccesary so they can keep each other company and in cold weather they can keep each other warm.

Yeah we had chickens when I lived on a farm there for a short time. We raised about a dozen or so and we sold the eggs. Fresh eggs are the best. Yeah they are easy to maintain, as compared to larger animals. I never really did much besides feed them and gather the eggs so it's not like I'm an expert. I would think two chickens in an insulated coup would be fine.

My advice would be to start at one just to get the hang of it and then move your way up to two and more if you want.

Oh and their shit smells worse than any other critter's that I have smelled. On second thought it's a tie with pig shit. But you get used to it quickly.

chickens are fun. we raised them from chicks when i was younger. make sure they have a warm coup, fresh water and feed daily, and if youre somewhere stray cats or eagles roam, make sure they are in a pen that can prevent them from being someone elses meal. we lost 5 chickens last year to coyotes and stray cats. i know, it was sad.

From my expirience at my grandparents farm, CHICKENS SHIT EVERYWHERE and they do it all the time. So get ready to clean up shit, other than that they are pretty cool.


IMO you should get ducks, they are way more interesting and you can still get eggs from them
