United States ranks highest in marijuana and cocaine use

America lands 1st place in drug use rates | RoneBreak

Why is it that we are ranked highest when we have a pretty strict drug policy? Or is it a result of having a strict drug policy?

it's because getting high is as american as apple pie.

we also have rampant alcohol abuse, but that's legal.

people are going to do what they are going to do.

Would we smoke pot if the penalty for doing so was death?

One country where almost no one smokes weed is the Asian city-state of Singapore. Singapore's drug laws among the harshest in the world. Possession of more than 500 grams of cannabis faces mandatory execution by hanging. Possession or consumption of ANY smaller amount will get you ten years of imprisonment. In terms of executions per capita, Singapore's ratio is higher than Saudi Arabia, China and Sierra Leone. There were an average of 13.57 executions carried out per one million of the population between 1994 and 1999, three times higher than the next country--Saudi Arabia.

Singapore is well known for its social conservatism. Just last year the government ended a 13-year ban on chewing gum - but only for medical use. And under Singapore law, oral sex, anal sex and homosexual intercourse are defined as acts "against the law of nature" and punishable by up to 10 years in jail.

I'm curious as to a medical condition that would be helped by chewing gum.

I will not speak about coca..., but regasrdind Marija I have doubts..., cause I think that in eastern Europe the consumpion is even impossible to trace.., so if somebody may count how many people smoke weed here he can multiply this number to 4 with full confidence, even despite if you are caught here you are proper fucked!

haha getting high is as american as apple pie...

in response to the oldman&theweed (love the username by the way)... my family is originally from the philippines where the law is death to all drug traffickers. i'm not an expert on the details of the drug laws there, but i do know that many people do smoke marijuana there regardless of the death penalty law.

then again.. the government there is pretty corrupt so you could probably pay off or bribe your way out of getting arrested or possibly killed.

WTF are you smoking? Strict drug policy? Here, in China, any drug trafficking is the death penalty, usually by a firing squad, mind you.

Strict drug policy as in most drugs are illegal in the states. As I stated before, in the Philippines (just like in China) the law of the land is death to all drug traffickers. However, with programs in the states like DARE and all the media propaganda surrounding the "war on drugs" you would suspect the the U.S. government to have some sort of leverage on the usage of marijuana and cocaine, but apparently not.

Regardless... better for us.

It's because of the false images of freedom laid before us, and the right to "pursue" happiness though not to have it. It's because we all need an escape of reality or a false happiness from the reality we live in the machine clockwork of life the MAN has created.
