NHL Season '08-'09

I thought since there wasn't one, I would make a thread to discuss the upcoming NHL season. Cover anything from games, transactions, or just good 'ole smack talk.

I want to take a tally of everyones favorite team so we all know where we stand on rivalries and such. I am a devoted Boston Bruins fan!

And please, I don't want this thread to be full of "hockey sucks", etc.

And for you Canadians, what is your opinion on having a new channel host Hockey Night in Canada, and a new theme song! Going to take some gettin' used to!

FAVORITE TEAM TALLY

BOSTON BRUINS - 1
BUFFALO SABRES - 1
COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS - 1
DALLAS STARS - 1
OTTAWA SENATORS - 1
WASHINGTON CAPITALS - 2

Keep your elbows down and your stick on the ice....when the ref is looking, lol.

Ahh, good to see another hockey fan on the forums. I'm sorry to say that we are pretty few and far between around here.

I'm excited for the new season, as a Senators fan I'd like to forget last season as quickly as possible. I really like the moves the Sens have made over the summer, acquiring Smith & Kuba, and making key re-signings. While I'm a little uncomfortable with the Gerber/Auld tandem in nets, it doesn't look like we are going to get an upgrade.

Man, losing Mezaros is huge for you guys. He is so young and is a very promising NHLer. Tampa sure loaded up this summer.

Meszaros had a promising rookie season. The past two seasons he has been horribly inconsistent, and often times is a liability on D. Not to mention he rarely hits the net on his dozens of PP shot-attempts in a given game. I liked the deal, we got a first rounder (supposed to be another deep draft), a prospect, and apparently a solid puck-moving d-man (I don't know much about Kuba).

he's going to be THE MAN on the Lightning defense. That's got to be good news for the other Southeast teams, especially when it's a choice of Mike Smith and Olaf Kolzig in net behind those inexperienced D

Well Matt Carle is another promising young defenseman, they are a young team defensively. There offense seems is stacked though, they really overhauled it this off season.

They are my early favorites coming out of the East, the Wings look ready to repeat in the West, with the acquisition of Hossa.

Even though this is now a NHL thread I feel like talking about the NBA.
I'm a huge Lakers fan, always was and always will be. With Andrew Bynum saying he's 100% and adding him to an already solid trio in Kobe-Gasol-Odom, we have possibly the strongest team in the NBA. It really depends on whether Bynum can start putting up 13-10 again (or the 22-13 he was putting up in his last month before being injured - don't quote me on those stats). If he can, then I have no doubt it's back to the Finals to face the Celtics again with both teams healthy. No doubt we could smash on them with Bynum and Gasol plugging up the paint, Kobe being Kobe, Odom being a constant mismatch for players, Sasha being a spark off the bench, Ariza playing solid D, etc.

Yeah, the Lake Show are strong. If Bynum is Bynum we saw before he got injured thats only great news for LA and bad news for the West. I am excited to see the start of this season.

Are you seriously picking the Lightning to lead the Eastern standings? I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't make the playoffs.

There offence just looks amazing. Mike Smith is a solid goalie, and they have a credible backup in Olaf Kolzig. If there defence and step it up and they make a deal at the deadline to maybe bolster up their d-line then I can see them doing some damage.

That being said, the Eastern conference should be interesting, a lot of solid teams. Bruins are going to be have a good year I think. Adding Michael Ryder IMO is going to be a good move to look back on. If the line him up with Marc Savard I can see a lot of pretty goals coming from the duo.
