intelligence of the caterpillar
A few years ago, I put mailing tape on the floor of my parents' basement to catch mice and crickets. Both pests get stuck on it. One day, I walked in and saw a caterpillar on the tape along with a cricket. I thought, "great, I caught one of those too." I came back, and the caterpillar was gone, along with part of the cricket, apparently it's food.
Next day, another cricket; and the caterpillar was back on the tape too, remaining still as I walked in. I walked toward him to smash him, and off he went under the furnace to safety. Got me to wonder, is he smart enough to know that was a trap? And was he smart enough to pretend he was stuck, knowing I would leave him alone? I know their instincts are to remain still when a predator is near, but from my experiences in other parts of the house, they usually only remain still when on a wall, but run as soon as I come into the room if they are on the floor. So, was this a case of following instincts, or perhaps these bugs are smarter than we give them credit for. He fooled me. |
