Where are the people of color NORML?


This to me looks like a 1950's TV show. I am a blackman and when I look at the world I see it thru the spectacles of my own community. I know the vast majority of the persons in US prisons for weed are persons of color and NORML knows this too. Yet, the selection and use of this ad shows who NORML wants to reach out too. In the past I've complained that NORML wasn't a organization for all but a Organization for whites and white interest only. I've said NORML has a glass ceiling and they operate like a whites only organization. Once again "TO ME" this NORML AD again shows who they are concerned with. Norml's own reports show persons of color to be arrested far more for "marijuana offense's" than whites yet this NORML legalization PSA contains only WHITE people! This is another example or reason I don't look at NORML as my leader they don't represent people like me - who also happen to be the ones who suffer the most in this POT WAR.. ---

At onepoint in this AD - The ad say's: "WE are all races and nationalities" - yet they only show one race (WHITE). I already understand how the mass media does things in black and white - (example if you want to show a negative ad about something use blackpeople (welfare) If you want to show a positive use white people) - If appears to me NORML has adopted this concept in its claim to want legalization it has only shown WHITE PEOPLE to present a positive image even if it is totally incorrect and not a accurate depiction of those who suffer from the current laws.

ONCE AGAIN - The spirtual aspect of marijuana legalization is IGNORED by white people in general because most are Christians. Again this ad talks about legalization, medical and gays but ignores who actually suffers the most in this WAR. EXCLUDES them for even being depicted.

From my point of view this ad sucks!!!! -- Norml tootes this ad as a great ad!

I've never had much love for NORML for unrelated reasons, but yeah, that definitely rubs me the wrong way. They are really pushing the diverse, multicultural card, but it all white people in the ad. Confusing to say the least. Given the judicial system.....its not those folks that have to worry about overcrowded prisons.

either norml has been corrupted and co-opted by the babylon systen or it has not.
i tend to think that it has been, but either way there are very few black people involved in norml. because of this, it makes no sense to complain that norml does not represent black folks when black folks dont want to participate and be involved. this is the great confusion of the system in operation that keeps marijuana illegal and maintains the largest prison population in the world.

if there was more diversity represented in norml ads, would norml be a better means of ending the drug war? it seems to me that the organization is doing little to change anything, regardless of norml's skin color

There was a time I may have thought similar thoughts BUT my experience and those of other blacks I talk to say OTHERWISE. NORML has a glass ceiling and it's policies and chooses of who it helps or what issues it supports shows because of it's lackj of inclusion.

If NORML came out and said 'Legalize for the white man only' then I'd see your point 100% but the fact that the ad company didn't cast a brotha or a sista in the commercial aint reason enough for me to say stop the cause.

I know the facts. I know there are disproportionate amounts of blacks serving time for drug related charges. I know more needs to be done to improve socioeconomic status among American minority groups to help end the disproportionate arrest rates.

However, this is an ad to push for change in cannabis laws that was selected by popular vote in a NORML sponsored contest. I highly doubt NORML was deliberately excluding any race. NORML didn't even produce the video, it was user submitted.

Your anger and frustration are misplaced here.

NJ, you have to remember one thing, NORML is trying to change the minds of white people who are in charge, so they need people in their ads who they can identify with (hence the one "representative" ). Subconsciously, I think alot of the power elite of this country still see America through their own, segregated, white spectacles. They aren't going to see smoking as okay and normal until they can associate it to people they relate to.

It's sad, but a fact of life. And if you want to make smoking seem okay enough to legalize, then you have to show it as something "regular" americans do - americans who are "regular" in the eyes of The Man, so to speak.

Oh by the way, I see a few 'people of color', just not your color. I can see at least one person of middle eastern decent and a couple Hispanics, perhaps I've lived in Los Angeles too long. Just because they aint black doesn't make them all white.

I can see your point here, I think we're all getting a little too sensitive. Does every booklet/sign/pamphlet have to have one white guy, one black guy, and one asian woman on the cover? Skin color is not that important.

I have no reason to believe NORML is excluding black people that would like to be part of their organization, and if they are, fuck NORML.
