Stoner is one of the dismissive terms used by people HATE us for smoking pot and believe we should all be in prison. Why not pothead, drug addict or druggie? They all are pejorative and imply a lifestyle. Like most cannabis users I only spend a minute fraction of my time smoking weed. Why should I let this tiny part of my life define me?

I am not a stoner, nor am I a pothead, and even though I do have a doctor’s recommendation to use cannabis, I do not even refer to myself as a medical marijuana patient. My responsible an infrequent use of cannabis does not define me anymore than eating bread makes me a bread-eater, or taking my dog for a jog makes me an athlete, or my prescription for Lipitor and low dose aspirin makes me a heart patient.

I do believe however, that a person’s overindulgence or dependence on any substance CAN define them. Just as someone who runs marathons has earned the title of “athlete”, so does a person who regularly drinks on the job and while driving has earned the title of being a “drunk”, and someone who goes through an ounce of weed as fast as they can may be termed a "pothead".

A six-pack of beer typically lasts about a month in our refrigerator, an ounce of pot will last my wife and me six months, but a half-gallon of ice cream will only survive for ten minutes in our house. I guess we all have our vices, and far more people die of complications due to cholesterol than Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol . So if I had to define myself based on my overindulgence or dependence of a substance, a more apt label than “stoner” for me would be “lard-ass”.

personally, I align myself with the "casual pothead". mostly because the phrase pothead has gone out of style, and stoner just reminds me of burnouts.

Of the two I'd rather be a stoner. It sounds more like a philosophy that a problem, like pot head. This is really a wine-o vz booze hound kinda problem...

From reading all this, it makes me think we need to come up with a better term to describe the kind of person who can smoke and still function in society.

I call myself a 'pothead' because 'stoner' was a term used for young people. I don't really like either term. They both have come to have negative associations with them now.

We need new words to describe us....

Any ideas???

It's true that many movements social, religious and other wise over time have taken the mocking to heart and named themselves as such. One that stands out in my life are the Unitarians. Who were mocked for believing in the unity of God as opposed to the Trinitarians, which comprises 99% of other Christian denominations at the time and now as well. Altough I would put a disclaimer that the Unitarians have moved to a more Universal approach to spirituality, hence the merger with the Universalists. Although that was more of a finacial catalyst, they fit well nicely. The Uni now seems to stand more for Unity, as opposed to a theological stance on the Triune God.

There are plenty more.

People call me hippie all the time. I don't label myself as such or in general label myself, however I realize that alot of people are more comfortable knowing me this way. Being called a name is contextual. When a friend goes 'Whooooaaaa' after something happens, I smile and say 'what stoner?' and usually get a laugh, 'ehehheheh I did sound like a pothead just then, eh?

I don't think we should use the word stoner and i'll tell you why, cause stoners are used to it! hell, they like it now. you gotta rotate your slurs. now i know it's hard, cause the word "stoner" just rolls off your tongue like the sweat off a stoner's forehead, but next time you wanna call a pothead a stoner, call that druggie a doper instead.

a stoner doesnt let weed control their life
they understand the responsibilities of smoking weed and know how much they can take in before theyre higher than a kite. stoners dont mope around all day in a room wondering how theyre gonna make money so they can at least get a dime.

a pothead claims that weed doesnt control their life when it really does
they do nothing but smoke all day, every day and dont give a fuck about what anyone thinks about it.
