Poll: Do you use Wikipedia as a reliable source?

I tend to lean towards yes...I've cross referenced and it almost always comes out to be correct. I like that it's always changing.

if its to settle a simple argument while sitting around the bong fire than yes its word is final. If i'm writing a paper or something along those lines than i check the footnotes and what not and try to use a book whenever possible.

yeah for random information its a good source. i was taught in highschool/university to never cite is as a source, but to use it as sort of a starting point for your research.

then now I'm in college, and some of my teachers base parts of the class on wiki pages....

wikipedia is a horrible source of information.

when i check the reference links, i find broken links, websites that have nothing to do with the topic, or really bad sites.

its a joke.

it can be ok for some general info, but regarding that general info one can find there, one can easily find a much better source of information, rather than what some random dingus posts on wikipedia.

no... you would (or you should) be failed in any science class if you cited wikipedia

i use it only if i know nothing about a certain topic and want general information that i can search scientific journal database for.

Interesting.

I can honestly say I really use it for the same casual information, in which it's pretty accurate, or it's supplemental in the case that it gives me a solid lead to go on in further researching a particular topic.

It can't really be used as a citation though and I never would, it's too dynamic and can change at any second. But for general research and finding out all the little bs about life, I find it invaluable.

I use it for supplemental information when I need to know a couple more specifics about something in order to research something properly....if that makes sense. Basically like what some other people already said....a starting point. I trust a lot of the info on there, but I never rely solely on it.

Yea I would use wikipedia as a reliable source, but then again I'm not above outright faking a source if I'm in a bind. If it is 4:00 AM and I'm still hammering out a paper that's due in a few hours my morality becomes something of a fluid concept, a lot different than it was 8:00PM the previous day.

i use wikipedia as a reference for reliable sources.

like those little super-script numbers everywhere in the text, i use those links to support my shit rather than actually quoting wikipedia.

I use it for basic knowledge concerning albums or artists i like because wiki is faster and easier to navigate than allmusic.com...

I also use it as a jump off point when researching any other topic...

Reading the comments - it's occurred to me that I really like wikipedia for it's explanation of both sides on most issues.

There's usually a description and everything, and many times a section about 'criticism.' As stated, it's a very good starting point.

if you ever reference wikipedia as a source for a paper, thats just dumb. It doesn't have any REAL credibility, and how hard is it to click the links at the bottom of the page to reference those sites for the real credibility?
