COLOMBO, Sri Lanka – A government doctor is estimating that two nights of artillery attacks on Sri Lanka's northern war zone may have killed as many as 1,000 civilians.

Dr. V. Shanmugarajah said Monday that more than 400 bodies were brought to the hospital. He said the large number of wounded and the stories survivors told him of burying their dead themselves made it clear the death toll was far higher. He said that the overall toll over two nights was as many as 1,000.

For sure the Sri Lankan government is prejudiced against the Tamils and atrocities are committed by both sides in that conflict. That`s bad. People should be more aware of that. It`s indicative that neither you nor shakeNbake knew who the belligerents were.

The situation does bear some similarities to Palestine. However that doesn`t make what`s happening in Palestine all right.

In fact this is more of the same. The Tamils barely have any military infrastructure left, they`ve lost the civil war to all intents and purposes now, their only way of fighting is by suicide bombings etc. So the government has labelled them terrorists and uses this as a justification for human rights violations.

The ironic thing is that Israel is the most concerened state in the world. Wounded terrorists are immediately treated in hospital, (well apart from one time on a bus back 30 years ago, there was an atrocity).
Israel has the best record for avoiding and minimizing civillian casualties.

In Gaza Israeli intelligence actually phoned the tenents in building that were targeted and told the to evacuate before the buildings were hit.

But still when the Sri Lankan army rockets whole Tamil towns without warning then that is perfectly acceptable and recieves minimul media attention.

The situation in Israel is much different than other countries, especially the fact that my US tax dollars go towards helping Israel continue to oppress a region of the world. I used to actually like Israel a little more because they were Jewish and I had been drawn into the whole "Palestine sounds like terrorist territory" mentality, but the fact is that Israel is just run by a bunch of self important fucks that like it when the Us give it to them up the ass in exchange for bigger guns.

Oh, and even if you go by the IDF casualty figures there were 1,166 casualties with 295 civilian deaths. However, it would probably be far more accurate to follow the PCHR figures at 1,417/926. Or the PMoH figures at 1,324 deaths including 437 children, 110 women, 14 medics, and 4 journalists.

My opinion of why this is, is because up until recently... the Sri Lankan authorities Vs Tamil Tigers war was more of a pitched battle... a government military taking on a well organised guerilla force in a pretty standard civil war.

Not good, civilians get caught in the crossfire, but pretty standard fare as far as violent confrontation goes.

What the Israeli government has been doing to the people of Palestine, isn't really a pitched battle between 2 armed forces is it?

Israel settles on Palestinian land illegally, oppresses the Palestinian people, when the Palestinian people try to fight back by throwing rocks at tanks and firing a barrage of unguided missiles that land somewhere in the desert... they go in mob handed and murder shitloads of people... shitloads of people from another country that they are slowly invading... just because Israel invades slowly doesn't mean the world can't see it for what it is... the world minus nationalistic Jews that is.


Israel/Palestine and Sri Lanka/Tamil are 2 completely different things.

What the Sri Lankan government are doing is not good, but what the Israelis are doing to Palestine is truly appaling.

You cant compare it with Sri Lanka. You dont hear about this shit happening in Sri LAnka every few weeks. But you do hear a few times within a year another bombing of PAlestine or Lebanon from ISrael.

The only genocide happened to european jewry in the holocaust. The present population of israel is largely made up from the genocide survivers and their children.

NO ONE IS CARRYING OUT A GENOCIDE AGAINST THE PALESTINIANS.
At leasat not in Israel. The Jordinian army killed thousands of Palestinians in one attack in 'black september'. The Egyptian army opened fire at them last year when they tried to break out into Egypt.

There is no genocide. Israel treats the Palestinians NO WORSE than any of the neighboring Arabic countries.

As far as recieving American aid, well so do many countries.

The mistake you make is by judging Israel by western standards.
Israel is not a western country. It is an advanced middle eastern society, not to be confused with a western one.
