Sea Shepherd Conservation Society
Thoughts? They're the group of anti-whaling activists that are featured in the Animal Planet show Whale Wars.
They hunt down whaling fleets and attempt to slow/stop their whaling by harrassing them or disabling the ships. I agree with them, as what the whalers are doing is illegal under international treaties, and if no government enforces the law, non-government entities have the legal right to step in and prevent this from happening. I think in a year or so(when I'm more fit and done with my current degree) I'm going to apply to go on a campaign with them.

The captain of that ship is a moron and constantly puts his crew in unnecessary danger. I recall one instance where someone fell overboard and he immediately yells to put the engines in reverse to go get him when in fact any captain of an ocean-going vessel should know that this would only suck him into the propeller and chop him up into whale food. It also seems like just about every other show the crew nearly dies trying to launch their boarding craft. And how about when he pilots his ship and rams a Japanese whaling ship? If anything this guy should be locked up for several accounts of attempted murder for constantly putting his crew and others in danger.
As for the issue of Japanese whaling and trying to stop them, I support the Japanese. People have been eating whales around the world for years and with current scientific monitoring it is increasingly easy to ensure that a species is not going to go extinct. The Japanese are also increasingly uninterested in eating whale meat which is seen as a wartime relic risen from necessity rather than a delicious meal. If I had the chance I would personally shoot Paul Watson in the head. |

Why would you support the annual slaughter of 1,000 members of two increasingly endangered species? Especially when the ICR(Institute of Cetacean Research) has time and time again been criticized as a purely commercial outfit disguised as research. http://www.baleinesendirect.net/pdf/...o_NY_Times.pdf "Japan's whale research program fails to meet minimum standards for credible science"
Even the International Whaling Commission agrees that they fail to meet any of their set goals and wants the Japanese government to "suspend indefinitely the lethal aspects of JARPA II conducted within the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary". http://www.iwcoffice.org/meetings/re...tion2007-1.pdf Regardless of whether people have been eating whales for years or not makes no difference, tradition does not make something right. I don't think the danger the crew is in is as bad as the show makes it seem(as it is edited because increased tension=ratings). And the reversing the ship happened when and entire Zodiac flipped over and was floating away with the crew on it. They were about 30 yards away before they went into reverse. But I agree, Watson can be foolhardy, which is why I'd want to crew on a different ship.

If you want to shave the whales and that's your thing, then go for it. I know that you can't change people's minds so I won't even try. I will say, though, that there are much better ways to get something accomplished rather than making an ass of yourself and organization and repeatedly putting others in harms way.
Does anyone know how you can become a merc on one of the whaling ships? I say if they want a pirate war that we bring it to 'em. |

lol wasn't it one of those guys who boarded a japanese ship, then got tied to the mast and beaten for two weeks by the japanese, late last year?
Also whale hunting isn't illegal, it is heavily monitored/restricted though.

I don't see the problem whaling is regulated theres enough of them out there. Vegan crew ramming another ship that is great. I hope they run out of tofu burgers.

The only way these crimes against nature are going to stop is through direct action forcing them to stop. Taking pictures and holding signs(Greenpeace) don't accomplish anything.

i think the olny way to make a lasting change is through education.
hunting creatures to the point of extinction is obviously evil but responsible hunting isnt bad. i mean think of duck hunters who love ducks and want there to be ducks forever are good, but as soon as you talk about whaling it becomes a "crime against nature"? i think thats an unrealistic way of looking at things. also, i dont believe ramming boats and other violent confrontational actions are a good way to change a situation like this. conservation shouldnt be about punishing ppl - we see how well the "punishment paradigm" works on changing other situations -it doesnt work well against drug users and it didnt work well for the tamils against sri lanka |
