Excuse me if I have misunderstood you kind sire.
It is a pretty simple concept, meat production uses several times as many resources as plant production.

You don't seem to be taking into account the higher demand for plant production.

To raise an animal you need to use maybe ten times the amount of plants relative to the amount of meat you will ultimately receive. By switching to plants you no longer need space for animals and you no longer need to expend food energy so the animal can grow and stay alive. Switching to plants is like cutting out the middleman, we would end up with more available food, not less.

This morning, PETA dispatched a letter to Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield, cofounders of ice cream icon Ben & Jerry's Homemade Inc., urging them to replace the cow's milk in their products with human breast milk. PETA's request comes in the wake of news reports that a Swiss restaurant owner will begin purchasing breast milk from nursing mothers and substituting breast milk for 75 percent of the cow's milk in the food he serves. PETA points out to Cohen and Greenfield that such a move on their part would lessen the suffering of dairy cows and their babies on factory farms and benefit human health at the same time.

you still need space for plants... AFAIK cows graze on grass so...

The point I was making was, if no one ate meat, then you wouldn't have factory farming. This would decrease grain consumption dramatically, freeing up more than enough fertile land to grow all the food that people need, and leave some to spare.

Sorry about the confusion.

if we were to rid of all the animals, eventually there would be nowhere to grow plants, the soils would go bad, and we would have little ferts to keep the soils full of the nutrients plants need to thrive...

We need both to survive.

I think we have a good plant/animal balance going here, though its leaning more towards animals right now.

Why would there be no room to grow plants? We would free up a ton of room by not raising animals. And soil degradation happens anyways, we don't need a huge amount of animals to keep soil fresh.

The problem that no one is seeing is that our agricultural practices are unnatural and destructive. Sure there'd be plenty of space to grow veggies, but if we kept farming the way we do eventually the soil to farm on would be ruined.

You can only get so much so fast out of the ground. If you don't abide by the natural process (it's a matter of fucking science, not hippie bullshit) eventually you can no longer sustain nature. Plants are not meant to grow in vast monocultures year after year on the same piece of land. Everywhere this is going on, the land is becoming less and less fertile. There are already places in this world that monoculture has completely destroyed the land.

Everything on this earth is interdependant. You can't pick and choose. Humans have this retarded way of thinking, oh yeah we just need this vitamin and that amino acid to get this result, and applying a single few observations to everything. When really, you need everything. It's all here for a reason, happening the way it does in nature for a reason. What's the reason?

BECAUSE THAT'S THE WAY IT NEEDS TO HAPPEN.

And we're not letting it happen, because we want to live a certain way, so we restructure it and do it our way. Which would be okay if we understood the ramifications and made decisions to better our natural world. But we don't. We make decisions to better our selves in the short-term and satisfy our little transient egos.

Hell, some of us are so misguided we think it's immoral to eat animals.

^^ pretty good there Sir-Ex.

Anyone who is saying we need to go either all animals, or all plants, they are wrong. Period.

It's about the moderation of each substance, evening themselves out. Some people may not like meat, I don't care, I love meat. But I eat it in moderation, and I sure as shit don't support factory farms. I prefer the normal- old fashioned farms you find in the midwest. Fast Food is really requiring the factory farms, and the worlds obsession with speed isn't helping.

And btw, just not eating meat, your only doing so little. Try going all vegan, lifestyle and food supply. When you buy that car, when you buy those clothes, when you buy just about anything at normal stores, don't you realize there were animals that had to 'suffer' somewhere in the process of producing that product? I'm not vegan, but to me when someone goes vegetarian just for the purpose of 'oh em gee the animals!' it sounds a little hypocritic to me when that person goes to the shoe store and buys themselves some shoes.

Yea you're right, I think the idea of exploiting animals for a purpose like tasty food is unjust, sorry if it is inconvenient to think of it that way.

It used to be acceptable to own and abuse people too, but things change and paradigms shift, it might not always be this way.

The treatment of other things is a completely different thing than the act of eating meat itself.

Anyways. In the end, there really is only one solution. A lot of us need to die.

That's true, but if we have evolved to the point where we can use our intelligence to reduce the suffering of other sentient beings on earth is it not worth doing?

we haven't, because we haven't evolved enough for selfishness and ignorance to be completely erased from the human species.

fyi, there are a lot of humane ways of processing meat, just because there are some bad examples out there doesn't mean thats all of them.
