Bear Grylls vs Les Stroud (Manvswild vs Survivorman)

in my opinion Les Stroud wins this contest hands down. For me it's as simple as the fact that he makes surviving look SO EASY while being on his own and videotaping everything himself. Meanwhile Bear has a film crew and a bunch of crew members to find food and shelter for him. Also there is no way that's his real name. Where does he get off eating something that's still alive like 2 minutes into every episode and then getting wicked sick? Also I doubt he actually ever spends the night outside. Espresso in the morning and martinis at night for this douchebag. Les Stroud is honest and simple, he goes out with his knife and maybe a fire starter and makes a damn good show out of it.

Survivorman ftw.

les stroud takes the field but the shows dont even pretend to be the same. i would love to see bear do some survivorman type things now that les is retired because ill bet he would do a good job at it- but his current show is not really real but its cool to watch.

yea survivor man was hardcore, that dude would walk a mile ahead of the camera to get a shot, then walk a mile back to get the camera, then walk back the same mile with the camera to get another shot.. all alone, he was the true survivor man. I like the Man vs Wild too though, he does have a camera crew n some stuff prepared, but he still goes out there and does some crazy shit every time. Anyone catch the last episode of Survivor man? He chewed that shit the locals gave him and he got all high and tripped out lol

yeah, you can't say your all about surviving in the wild alone when you have a camera crew backing you up.

imo it always made the rest of them look like shams/pussies next to les

annoys me when people say bears show is fake, he still demonstrates techniques to survive and hes a total legend. Hes served in the SAS, scaled everest, flew a paramotor over everest, crossed the atlantic in a rib, hes done all sorts of stuff. Just because he doesnt stay in all of the locations all night doesnt mean he couldnt. Its a good show.

I will admit that Grylls has some credibility because of his background. But I have watched both of their shows, and I feel like Stroud brings more to the table when it comes to actual survival tips (rather than pulling stunts that seem to be aimed more at grossing people out than keeping them alive). He is so damned creative too. It always excites me to see what kind of trap or trick he's got up his sleeve. Total badass in my opinion.

Les is just some dude out in the bush. Its not too exciting, its not super incredible-military-awesome rambo-ness, but thats why it is so awesome.

His shows remind me of legitimately being in the bush, not watching some unattainable tv show.

HA! I've had this debate also.
Les all the way.
Bear chomps into animals, fish, etc. in excess in a lot of his shows just for the shock factor. There was one episode where he bit into one fish, then bear clawed another to do the same. And then said how he couldn't eat the two fish. SO WHY BOTHER?
Bear is just BS. Before all the "he stayed at a hotel shit is fake" hype, he was trying to get across a big gap, and he says why oh look! There happens to be another line from a previous hiker, looks to be in good condition, I'll just fashion a harness out of this grass here or whatever the fuck...then a minute later there's caribiners and new line in the shot. Got old

les stroud. hands down.

i PA'd a few times for this director that is [was? hahah.. the way he talked about him kind of made it seem past-tense] buddies with him, and he said les is 'a very interesting guy, but very difficult to be friends with at times..' hahaha

also said dude is pretty eff'd in the head, so he could whip out that loco head-space and pwn that brit pip.

there was an article in the paper the other day about an 11 year old boy who was seperated from his family whilst hiking through the mountains. the boy said he remembered survival techniques from man vs wild, such as leaving a trail from torn articles of clothing and other such things I cannot recall which led to him being rescued some 14 hours later. kudos to that, but, Les Strouds show beats the living fuck out of Bears IMO.

Lloyd, I suppose the thing is, if Bear is so legendary, why does he opt out from making a baddass show like Les has done which he did without all this SAS training and what not. I agree with Scattered Heart, Bear is shock and awe whereas Les literally does what he HAS to do to survive. If he fucks up and his sattelite phone doesn't feel like working, he could die. (or the bagillion other fates he could encounter while being completely alone) now that's fucking entertainment. Not some dude fronting like his life is in danger for an hour when it's totally not. That's not compelling tv.

imo, your statement puts bear down more than it says his show is good.

hes basically lying to viewers by pretending to survive out in the wilderness alone with no assistance and actually staying there.

just imo though

neither is better. they have their own ups n downs. bear's got the HD cams, the SAS exp., and he can climb waterfalls and stuff. les is out on his own, which is badass, and hes actually trying to survive

i think that's also refered to as acting, pacman.

basically, survivorman > man vs wild. no question.

in a 1vs1 matchup, i still vote Les because he does shit all on his own. Constantly challenging himself mentally and physically. Bear is just a celebrity hack, and relies too heavily on other people to make decisions for him and succeed. his rusty skills would be his ultimate downfall.
