Online Poker
What's the best site?
I don't want to play for money just yet, I need to hone my skillz first, yanno? But I do want the option to upgrade my service or whatever when I feel comfortable doing it for cash.

full tilt or pokerstars. full tilt is better for cash games, stars is better for tournaments.
be advised though, play money doesn't really help you get better. if you already know the hand rankings and basic betting strategy then you are probably better off jumping right into micro-stakes real money. also read these: ****Concept of the Week" Schedule and Table of Contents**** - Two Plus Two Poker Forum also, if you are seriously starting from scratch, you should look into just playing PL Omaha rather than NL Hold em. Its a tougher game, but has way more depth, and way more donkeys (noobs). Last edited by Puffman; 06-30-2009 at 11:31 AM. |

I agree with puffman that if you are starting from scratch play anything but holdem. Holdem has been the number one game for maybe a decade now and the competition is much tougher at any stakes than in any other game. Omaha looks like it's becoming more popular and the players are particularly bad at omaha hi/lo. I like pot limit omaha hi/lo but whatever you do don't dive in head first into any game without learning as much as you can about it, but you said you wanted to start with play money so I guess you already have that in mind. Use the play money games to see what kind of hands are usually out there but not to get a feel for the way the game is played because like puffman also said the play of the play money tables has very little resemblance to the play of even a .01/.02 cash game. The forum that puffman linked to is absolute gold for whatever game you play.
I prefer stars for a couple reasons, number one, it has the most players of any site and that means more opponents to choose from in the cash games, and larger tournaments and more tournament options. Stars also has lower rake and a pretty good frequent player rewards thing (Full tilt has one too but I think stars' is a little better) There is however a 33% rakeback for full tilt where stars has none, but in order to get the rakeback for fulltilt or any other site that offers it you must sign up with a third party rakeback affiliate BEFORE you create your username. If you plan on playing for money on Fulltilt, signing up for rakeback first is a must. As long as you get rakeback I consider Tilt and Stars to be about even as far as rake goes. So to sum it up either full tilt or pokerstars, but sign up for rakeback first if you play on full tilt. |

i just got 77th outh of 6606 in a rebuy tourny on pstars. i shoved AK into QQ, a virtual coinflip (slightly in favor of QQ), had i hit, i would have had enough chips to make a run for the final table and thousands of dollars

Wooooow I played on bodog for the first time last night and the players there are so wild, it seems like half of them are just there purely to gamble and they don't care if they're getting their money in bad. Must have something to do with the sports betting and casino games associated with the site. I sat down on a $10 buy in plo8 table that had a couple maniacs with money and left it with $80. They were a lot worse than on stars. I can't wait til I run my account up to where I can absorb the swings of the 200 plo8 game. At this rate it won't be but another few days. I may have found a new home.

^ ultimate bet is fucking sketchy, i'm sure you heard about the ridiculous cheating scandal (powerusers were able to see everyones hole-cards). also there was another debacle involving phil hellmuth scooping a pot with the worst hand.
