Eh, aside from coming across like an asshole, dude does have a point. They are called recruiters for a reason. Earlier it was said that it's not always a cakewalk and it's not always hell on earth, and I've gotta back that. Luck of the draw really. Know a fair amount of dudes for whom shit was gravy and a couple for whom it was absolutely terrible. Straight up ted I think you could make better use of yourself elsewhere.

i havent talked to a recruiter yet, because i know that once you talk to them they will never leave you alone and im not 100% serious about joining yet. in highschool i sent a mail order to the army asking for more information to get a free duffle bag and it said no obligation on the thing, well after that the army recruiters would never leave me alone, they showed up at my house in a humvee, shit was ridiculous...

Easy there, (fudge)pacman. I think I might have hit too close to home on the gay issue for you. It doesn't matter, we accept all kinds here, even those who can't make a sentence without the words pussies and piss.

Have you considered joining a monastery? You could go live in a high mountain top or a jungle in Asia. Whatever your leaning there is a religion out there with monasteries that will fit.
You want fit and formal training, try going to a Buddhist one where they go on begging rounds in bare feet and eat once a day. You can travel the world with in, for free. See places you've never been, and all for a low low cost of following some rules and trying to create harmony. Seriously whether you are comitted or just want to drop out for a while, this is a finacially free option that might help you get your head together. There are many monasteries in North America as well, if you can't go far, or be too far from family. I'm not joking. This about it. Can't be any more extreme that military service can it?

Not spending money means not having to make it. Isn't income just for overhead costs pretty much?

Except if he joins a monastery, when he gets out he's in the same place. From the sounds of it, he's ready to advance.

thats the main motive, when i get out i can advance my life, have enough money to hold me for a while and figure out what i want to do, and have skills to get a job. anything else would just be stalling the inevitable day where i need to do something to enter the professional world. and right now i have zero job references, piss poor job experience, mediocre grades so its really hard to get my foot in the door. i have no friends in this town anyway, i have nothing really holding me back, i have no job or job prospects... so its either work in a supermarket or join the navy

Well good luck Ted. I only said the monastery as a converse example and to show there is ALOT you can do with yourself in between military and religious service.
I'm not sure what grades have to do with getting a job, you have the degree no? It's not about me here, but no one has ever asked me for my report card I have alot more I would like to say about how I've gotten jobs and what it takes ime, but maybe it's not what you need to hear. Just know I have faith that you could live anywhere and find something to do that will 'advance' your life.I only mention any more to this because I also didn't get the feeling that the navy lined up perfectly with your values. There are things like the peace corps which kinda fall in between those two, it's like joining the army of peace? Honestly brother, I just want to you to be happy with who you are and where you are and are going. So I'll wish you the best and be here for you no matter what you choose. Don't be scared of anything though because you'll always be all right as long as you stay resourceful and have an open mind. Much love and happiness. SageTree
