Firstly, I thought some of you may enjoy this artist - Jeffrey Lewis. He's from the new york "anti-folk" scene (i.e. The moldy peaches, ish marquez, major matt mason USA). He does a whole album of CRASS covers.
But anyways, this is a neat little video I found of him explaining (very quickly) the history of punk music and how it developed in the lower east side, NY.

Now, I know 99% of t.v. shows, books and magazine articles cover the history of punk music in a very half assed way. They usually start with 60's garage bands, go into bands like the NY dolls and then straight into the sex pistols, hardcore, grunge and so on.
But I really like the way he covers the subject. He shares my opinion that punk music is just a modern form of folk music. Music of the common man that doesn't take musical training to perform.
He starts with Harry Smith's american folk collection, and go's into John cale, the holy model rounders, the fugs etc.
