Mayor beat with metal pipe

Quote:
A 20-year-old man has been arrested in the Saturday night attack on Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett, Milwaukee Police Chief Ed Flynn said.

The man was found in a residence Sunday afternoon near 17th and State streets, Flynn said.

A friend of the suspect said he told the suspect he had to leave his home when he realized what the suspect had done.

He said the suspect is a normal guy who has been distraught lately because he hasn't been able to see his daughter.

The West Allis police department and the mayor's office said Barrett and his family were leaving the State Fair and walking near West 88th and South Orchard streets in West Allis when they heard a woman screaming for help. The mayor approached the woman, who was with her 1-year-old granddaughter, and started to call 911, but the suspect who had been attacking the woman started hitting the mayor with a metal pipe, police said.

Police say the 20-year-old suspect was drunk and threatening to shoot himself and others because he couldn't see his 14-month-old daughter.

The mayor’s chief of staff said Barrett broke his hand punching the suspect.

Barrett underwent surgery on his hand and was in stable condition Sunday afternoon at Froedtert.

The woman was not injured.

"Tom was just doing what every good citizen would do,” Milwaukee Alderman Bob Donovan said. “Someone's in trouble, you step up and you help them, and here some joker comes along and nails him.”

Flynn said the suspect has not been charged and was being questioned Sunday afternoon. West Allis police found the weapon believed to have been used in the attack.

"(Mayor Barrett) acted like the good citizen that he is,” Flynn said. “He not only risked serious injury, but endured serious injury.”

Gov. Jim Doyle visited the mayor in the hospital Sunday morning and said he was in "good spirits."

"The mayor's heroic actions clearly saved a woman and others from harm. Jessica and I, along with all the people of Wisconsin, are wishing him speedy recovery," Doyle said in a written statement.

The mayor's brother, John Barrett, said the family is grateful for everyone's thoughts and prayers.

Wisconsin State Fair issued a statement Sunday morning following the attack.

"The management of Wisconsin State Fair Park commends Mayor Barrett for his actions as a Good Samaritan after his departure from Wisconsin State Fair last night. His efforts to aid a citizen’s cries for help should be praised and applauded."

Residents of the area where the attack happened said their neighborhood is normally quiet, except when the state fair is in town.

Kelly Loehe said she didn’t realize anything was wrong until police arrived.

“Normally the fair brings out that kind of element,” she said. “So traditionally if I hear loud voices like I did last night, yelling and that sort of thing, I didn’t think it was anything worth calling the police over.”
they showed him on the news today and man does he looked fucked up.
