My wife was laid-off on Monday. She made 70k a year. Fuck you OfficeMax! She was there (formally Boise) for 18 years. When her accounts found out she was laid-off many said they told her boss of their opposition to this move and that they were pissed. It's all business. At least she got 6 months severance, has her BA, can type 100 words a minute, and knows MS Office programs (all of them) inside and out. Plus she has a lot of connections b/c of what she did. That being the case, we plan on collecting her severance right away along with her unemployment in the hopes she will get employed soon and then we can just bank her severance. That would be ideal, but you never know.
I have worked for the Commonwealth of Mass for the last 9 years and my job is solid, thank god. As are the benefits, which is key. This happened to my wife a week from last Monday. This could either be a blessing in disguise or a nightmare if she is still unemployed come next winter. I do not expect that to be the case however, but you never know. She is a wreck as she has NEVER been unemployed in her life. So the end of 2009 has not been good.

my mom has been unemployed for over 6 months, 61 years old with only an associates degree. was working in the trucking industry for about 30 years. can't find a job even though she's put in dozens of applications and resumes. no one wants to hire a 60 year old lady.
she could get a low paying job but that would pay less than the unemployment. she is probably going to end up having to go on social security and end up working a shit job to get buy untill me and my siblings can take of her the way she deserves. no retirement, no IRA, no 401k, nothing. all been used up trying to stay afloat. so yeah, i know how it is.

My wife has an old school pension (never see those anymore - here ex-co stopped pensions about three years ago). She still has that and a 401k that she can roll over. We aren't going to be stupid and tap into it though, as it is a lot of $ that we do not want to be raped on taxes on. That is certainly a last resort. Again, the plan is to roll it all over and live off her severance, unemployment, and my income (and good Health insurance, etc) in the hopes she gets something soon. She's no slacker.

yeah we are going to have to take care of my mom for the rest of her life, her mental health is failing too. I don't mind though, she raised me for chrissakes. some of my other siblings aren't quite as...convicted as I am though, but I am the first born afterall.
she deserves better than this.
