Speed Matters

Everyone check how fast your internet is and then on the right there's a button that says to raise the national average. Well if you click it it will make you fill out a form for a petition and hopefully we can spread it around to actually do something about it.

There should be a petition against having to pay out the ass for an ISP before we're concerned with making it faster

its bullshit though because of course these small countries like japan and sweden and korea are going to have better coverage. they dont have nearly as much land mass to cover.

it really shouldn't matter. it's not a matter of coverage because we know every town in the united states has internet, it's just a matter of not half-assing the job.

the time it would take for electricity(the internet) to get from colorado to california vs. california to new york shouldn't even be noticeable to humans.

it's the networking(ISP technology) that's between the two points that makes the difference.

that's another thing I've been thinking about recently. commercials have been getting longer and longer every year. before you know it TV will be half commercials and half tv shows.

it's like the cable companies jam as much as they can for commercials to get their advertising paid for. like when they put commercials RIGHT before the last minute of the show or movie and then once the show is over it goes to commercials again within two minutes.

Fuck TV.

@ ionly - Yeah, if we were talking about cable tv, that would be valid.

I have no idea if this is true or not but my guess would be what makes the US slow is having half fiber optic cables and half traditional wire cables, if that.

I was talking to a cable guy about fiber optics and stuff not too long ago.

The internet is not electricity. The internet, is waves of light, transmitted throughout the country through thousands of miles of Fiber Optic cables that were buried in the 70's.

From what I was told, the biggest problem with the fiber optic lines that are already run is that smaller towns usually don't have the same fiber optics run throughout which limits the speed.

Basically, you can have fiber optics all through your town, but unless the actual fiber optics are going directly into your house you don't have it.

TV is quite the drag.

Regardless, you can buy fast internet. Faster than it was 10 years ago. Some places in the world don't even have telephone lines run.

I think we're doing pretty good.

Not every town. We have much more rural areas in america that are harder for high speed companies to reach.

Especially compared to say, Japan, which is a teeny tiny little island.

Even when i was in boulder i saw commercials on tv for "new" high speed internet options.

Exactly. Although when REAL fiber optic technology hits it will be much easier to connect everybody. The technology in use today is ancient (in techno years :P)
