We pay for it in taxes but it is nice to spend a week in the hospital and come out with a $40 bill for your cable tv (though I was still outraged).

the purpose of healthcare reform is to lower the cost of healthcare for everyone. there would be laws so you couldnt get dropped by your insurance, and if you did public insurance would be there for you...

but anyway, the point of this thread is that they charge ridiculous prices for poor service. america pays way more than any country for health services and is ranked 17th for quality of care. the american system is fucked for a number of reasons which i wont get into here.

update: i found out that apparently the insurance failed to properly file my student questionnaire surveys 3 separate times and they are fully covering all my charges. i have insurance for another year, w00t w00t!

nice. Since you made the title of your thread the core of the health care problem I have to throw my two cents in. I think it's so expensive because of the over reliance on insurance for every little thing that the patient doesn't care how much costs and neither do the hospitals as long as it's covered.

your totally right. compound that with fraud and beurocratic waste, along with constantly new and more expensive but not always necessary technology and drugs and you get rampant cost inflation!

liability in the states is a joke. doctors can be sued for what amounts to human error. they cannot afford to practice without million dollar insurance policies. basically blame the lawyers(ambulance chasers) & judges who allowed this to happen by awarding huge settlements in medical malpractice claims.

pharmaceutical companies are out of control, and need to be way more regulated. fuck capitalism, people's health and lives are at stake. profit in healthcare should be illegal imo.

Here's an article asserting that the malpractice reason is a common misconception.
U.S. health costs highest; malpractice no factor: study - MarketWatch

"In 2001, the average malpractice award in the U.S. was $265,100. That was lower than Canada's $309,417 and the United Kingdom's $411,171 but higher than Australia's average payment per settlement or judgment of $97,014. All four nations had malpractice payments that represented less than 0.5% of total health spending."

No one should ever defend HMO subsidies. They're a big part of the mess we're in now.

I understand exactly what you're saying, but it would seem that profit in health care is the driving force to develop more advanced medical technology.

In reality it should be wanting to help other people regardless of how much they make, but humans are greedy bastards.
