It's a fucked up thing. The guy is one of the greatest film directors of all time, yet he will be remembered most for boning a 13-year old. I know it's wrong, what he did, but it's also wrong how we obsess on this shit. After reading the article, I'm inclined to think the 32 years of ongoing attention after the fact has harmed that girl more than what polanski did. We, as a culture, seriously need to rethink our obsessive fascination with fame.

It's been forty years. Although underage, if not consentual (due to age), it was at least not forceable.

None of these things are esculpatory however.

These offenses are painted with a broad brush by the law here in the US.

Not so in other countries.

My guess is that he will die of old age in a California prison.

I doubt they will send him to prison. They'll lay some punishment on him, but with the victim testifying on his behalf, this is likely to be more about the government of the US asserting its dominance in a situation where someone got the better of it for awhile. He'll probably get community service making date rape avoidance movies for the California public school system.
