So, in a few weeks here, due to my plant closing I'm going to be on the dole.

I currently pay about $25 a month for my medical insurance, which admittedly is a shitty plan but it brings my asthma meds down to a semi reasonable price.

I have the opportunity to continue my coverage through COBRA for about $85 a month.

I'm going to be taking a pretty good cut in pay going from employed to a UI recipient but my expenses (rent, lights, gas, food and the like) haven't gotten any less, as a matter of fact, they're going up every day. I'm not one of these guys who live beyond my means either, no credit card debt, I own my cars and I rent my house because its pretty cheap.

So, if I take the COBRA to keep the price of my meds down I won't have enough money to buy them. If I ditch my insurance, the price of my meds without insurance is way too much for me to afford on unemployment...

I'm fucked.

there's gotta be a few homeopathic asthma remedies, maybe one or a combination of them will work. it's your call whether you wanna brave the world without insurance (for now, until reform)

the full scope of the healthcare reform won't be noticble until like 2011. i would reccomend keeping overage for now... in the meantime, sell some weed? side business ftw!

There's a business concept that could undermine healthcare reform. If the government of country A makes meds affordable by subsidizing them, while country B does not, this encourages citizens of Country A to smuggle cheap meds to Country B and sell them at a premium (still cheaper than non-subsidized). This, effectively, makes the taxpayers of Country A responsible for the citizens of Country B, as well as themselves.

Of course, you can always make it against the law to do this, which has always worked in the past.

If you're like me, the answer is yes.

I just started my new job last Monday so I won't have benfits for 90 days (dont understand how these assholes dont have benefits on day 1.. and still waiting for the COBRA papers to come from my old job...).

Anyway.. today I called Discover and essentially scammed them into lowering my APR from 26% to 3.9%!!!! I told them that I was in between jobs and had extensive medical bills, which is considered a 'hardship' (also note; losing your job is also considered a hardship so you'll def. qualify). Now my apr is almost 10x less, and best of all, any payments I make go towards 100% principal. Now I'm going to pay off my other CC's first and let that fucker sit till last...

Anyway.. just something worth trying, with my balance w/ those cunts its saving me a hundred+ a month...

BTW - how long before you got the COBRA papers from your old job? with my luck I just know I'll get fucked by them and get missed on the COBRA and then really fucking have hardship...

Welcome to the club No1. I've been fighting with unemployment for 7 months now.
And health care is something I haven't had in over 30 years.
Medical Assistance might cover your med costs if unemployment won't.(That is dependent on how much you did make while you were working.) (and you must pass drug test and other "needs" tests to qualify.)
According to the government you probably make too much to qualify for anything but uc.
(unemployment compensation), like myself.

Have you started looking for alternative work yet ?
