Language and watching it...

About 5 minutes ago, I was battling with a swifter dust mop. It was caught on something in the closet and I couldn't jiggle it free.

So I said, with crescendoing volume, 'Holy Shiiiiiiiittt!!!!' and immediately heard, 'Gawd Dammit!!! This is stupid!' coming from the living room, courtesy of 2 year old Little Wing.

I don't think it's funny or cute when children curse. I think it's ugly and aweful and sad that they cannot express themselves in a more eloquent manner.

spell-check before passing judgement on the eloquence of others.

I agree with you man, I didn't start cussing till 7th grade, and even then my brother and his friends discouraged it.

The worst part is that when we get older cussing is the only vocabulary that comes to mind whenever we injure ourselves.

Merc, you're missing the point.

I'm not teaching my kid to swear. Not intentionally.

there's a time and a place for it, and I probably cuss more than any one I know. I just agree that it does start young, so why not try to prevent it if possible? I started young, and I will cuss like a sailor till I die.

It's true about that natural cussing reaction to getting hurt. Also, when I drop things I tend to cuss. I guess THAT's better than giving a daintly little "ooops!" or "owwie!"

I studied that shit extensively and majored in how to use it to express.

Kids repeat what they hear. My father used to scream at me when I was single digits (age-wise). One of my best friends got me in trouble with my principal in 1st grade because I said "fucking" and he was offended or threatened, even though it was said in a casual manner regarding no one in particular.

Now I have a niece (turning 12 in Dec.) and a nephew (9) and I'm having to sputter gibberish or fake extreme emotion to mask my slips.

Is that fair? I never heard a single word on cable (HBO, SHO, MAX access since age 2) that I hadn't already been verbally abused with.

*chiquitito violins, por fa)

that all aside, those words are part of the lexicon, and they have unique derivations and myriad uses and contexts. I hate when older adults say to younger adults, teens or mature adolescents, "you could express yourself so much more eloquently, so much more intelligently, so much more uniquely."

Yeah, it's true, part of the time, maybe most. But there are certain situations where words like "fuck" and "shit" are the most accurate for describing what's being described. It's called being succinct.

No, not for a form of expression I believe she has to right to exercise later on in life.

What my wife and I do is immediately correct ourselves, like in this case, substituting 'Grape Donut' for Gawd Dammit.

That's what I did. I went in to the living room and started stomping my feet and saying 'GRAPE DONUT, GRAPE DONUT!!' and started laughing at myself.

She mimicked me, and that was that.

It'll be fun to explain why my daughter is yelling 'Grape Donut!' to anyone in the future.

Or when she calls her teacher a 'horse licker'.
