BBC NEWS | Asia-Pacific | Men survive weeks lost in Pacific

A group of men from Papua New Guinea have been rescued after more than two months adrift in the Pacific Ocean.

A helicopter belonging to a US-flagged fishing vessel, the Ocean Encounter, spotted the boat as it drifted off Nauru on Sunday.

Seven men were on board but two died after being rescued by the US crew.

The five survivors are now in hospital in Majuro in the Marshall Islands, thousands of kilometres from where they first set sail.

According to Giff Johnson, editor of the Marshall Islands Journal, they appeared to be "in very serious stages of illness, malnutrition" when they arrived.

"Four of the five survivors who came off had to be carried off on stretchers, one was able to walk," he said.

The group - initially of eight men - told rescuers they had been making a short crossing in PNG's New Ireland area on 14 September when they ran out of petrol.

They said they had seen a number of vessels while they were adrift but failed to attract their attention.

Last Friday one of the eight - a 17-year-old boy - died after jumping overboard to rescue clothing that had blown away.

The group told a Papua New Guinean sailor on the Ocean Encounter crew that neither they nor he had had enough strength to get him back into the boat, Mr Johnson said.

A second man died shortly after the US vessel rescued them and a third man just hours before the vessel arrived in the port of Majuro on Tuesday evening.

The five survivors were said to be stable in hospital, Mr Johnson said.

These kinds of situations are fuckin crazy to hear about. I just watched a movie about the brazilian rugby team that had to eat their dead friends to stay alive in the andes.

I was probably around the same age. The scene where seats of people start falling out the back of the airplane has helped give me a fear of flying.

Look I can tell you right now I would not hesitate for one moment to eat any one of you, or anyone else for that matter. I don't want to know what that dramatic impact it would have on me.

I can't understand how some people can refuse meat and so willingly accept death as not to desecrate the cadaver.

I doubt it. One person can go a long way. And since they were in the ocean they could've even salted his meat and stored his piss for disinfectant and his blood for emergency plasma. Probably could've even fashioned an evaporation basin out of his freshly carved scalp. One person could last a month for 7 people if rationed properly.

some guy survived months alone on the open ocean and caught fish to eat. when he was rescued he claimed he felt more healthy than ever because he ate every part of the fish and got lots of vitamins. fresh water in the fish eyes kept him hydrated and he said that those turned into a kind of dessert that he especially craved. gonna try to find the story because it was awesome

How'd he catch the fish? That's what I'm wondering.

yeah i wish i remembered dude but i saw it on a tv documentary so it must be true! it was on discovery channel or something, all about how responses of the brain can be altered under different situations. in this guys case it was his brain causing him to crave organs of the fish that he would catch which contain the nutrients needed to keep his body running, more so than the meat

For Inuit children, fish eyes are a treat-like candy.
