My new baby

After picking up the banjo a few years ago I've been really wanting to get a mandolin. I finally got one today...It was super cheap. I got in new for like $280 with tax. Its acoustic electric, not bad at all. I wasnt gonna drop a fuckload of money on it. The only problem is its hard to play with my big ogar hands lol.

Sorry, I'm just excited

I really like the Banjo but I don't think I have ever heard a mandolin (that I know of). Do you play in a band?

That's awesome. I've always been interested in both instruments. I play some guitar, but haven't taken up anything beyond that. Is banjo pretty close to guitar, in terms of chords, scales and such?

Let me know what you think. For some time now I've considered going from bass to this, so I can take it with me more, since the electric bass requires so much to move. Acoustic bass is my other equal option, just more money.

How would you rate it compared to other stringed instruments?

Mando's are pretty awesome when done right.

Sage I still recommend the acoustic bass, I've always wanted one of those things.

Ok let me try to respond to these one at a time:

First off this is a mandolin in the beggining of both of these songs:

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/PCgrk_hzP1M&hl=en_US &fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScree n" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptacc ess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/PCgrk_hzP1M&hl=en_US &fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="a lways" allowfullscreen="tru e" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/vA1DGClMKNs&hl=en_US &fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScree n" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptacc ess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/vA1DGClMKNs&hl=en_US &fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="a lways" allowfullscreen="tru e" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Secondly the tuning of the mandolin is like a backwards violin. The strings are tuned GDAE from the one closest to you down.

Third, acoustic basses are rad. Go check out the Violent Femmes first couple albums...that's what you're in for. Acoustic electric ones are good too. Lol now I'm imagining funky moses rockin' the bass.

Funk/blues is really the style I learned myself just by playing what I think should be added to what I hear, actually. I plan on getting electric anything if I buy. Although I am selling my amp which is most of the heaviness associated with lugging it around. Perhaps the middle ground would be saving up to by a strong small bass amp?

Regaurdless.

Let me funk you to the Promised Land!

I stayed up all night setting it up tuning it (the new strings had to be stretched) and learning a few chords and strumming styles. I learned that flogging molly song. Even though theres not a mandolin playing chords I just kind of did the lead and then improvised. Um...But anyways, I was trying to learn this song just now (also no mandolin...just want to cover it) and I realized it had some funny ass lyrics if you live or lived or know someone who lives in socal.

"I'm from Chino where the asphalt sprouts"
"And even if i have to go to claremont, well I'll have to go to claremont"
and my favorite
"And you'll send your dark messengers to tempt me, I come from Chino so all your threats are empty"

lol...I've spent endless hours in the several anal canals of southern california (cough cough Fresno, cough cough fontana).

Anyways...Did I tell you guys I'm rolling my own cigarettes now? So much cheaper

If you want to hear some kickass mandolin playing, listen to David Grisman.

If you've ever heard Rod Stewart sing "Maggie Mae", you've heard a mandolin.

You know, in this age of autotune and mixing boards and sound editing, four guys around one mic singing at the same time is freakin' awesome!

They sound exactly the same live or studiofied. Thats a sign of a great artist in my book.
