when im at school in utah i just tell people im from seattle. whenever i say washington i get retarded people who get all confused just like this thread title if i say washington or washington state. when i say state they still ask if i mean dc so i gave up trying. anything on west side of the mountains is now seattle cuz i have to dumb it down for the locals there

Living on the west and the east I've see both sides. Mostly I just patiently wait if someone has to ask, it's really not any skin off my nose. And if someone mentions Washington, I hold a few seconds for context clues.
I personally call in the Capital or DC and just Washington for the state. Didn't know I was from a common wealth there mookie....now I am going to go do some reading.....

Washington also makes more sense if you're watching a new broadcast or something, in the same way that we say Tel Aviv or Hong Kong. It's a national capitol and as such gets whatever name it damn well wants, especially when going up against some backwater state full of tree-dwelling hippies.
