Nationalism

Are you nationalistic?

I live in an area with people from a lot of different nations. But by far the Americans take the cake for nationalism. I know it''s somewhat ingrained for many of you.. but seriously why does everything have to come down to which nation you were born in? Its a sign of a weak argument if you have to take it tp that. I'm British.. but I'm not like.. my country is so awesome.. its the best in the world.. everyone else are just fuckers. Ugh maybe I'm just pissed off. End rant.

americans tend to be more nationalistic than people from other countries because we're currently the nation with the most power. chinese people and russians are also very nationalistic for the same reason.

if you don't mind my asking, what inspired this little rant? i'm interested.

when i say americans are more nationalistic because america is the most powerful, it's because many americans believe that the fact we have power is the result of some sort of quality we have that other nations don't which makes us somehow "better."

Fair enough, those are some measures of power, without a doubt. Although I do have to chuckle seeing military influence. That is a nice way to put it

I gotcha brother. That 'power' makes a lot of sense in theory and having lived there I know what you are saying about 'might makes right'.

I think the Puritans called that feeling of right 'divine providence'....

There are a lot of over laps between them and ways of life now, imo. But that is another rant

I'd be willing to bet that currency and maple leaves aside. The average person would not be sure what side of the 49th they were on, at least for a day or so.

I don't especially identify with my country. I love the idea of the United States, because it was founded on the idea that if you word the laws just right, you can make naturally dishonest people run a country honestly. However, I am also disappointed because that experiment doesn't seem to be working out.

the only reason i like the US so much is cause of the freedom and the food, and it's so worth it. Ok it's not the only reason, but there's not a lot of places I'd rather be.

Yes, some Americans can be nationalistic, xenophobic jerks.
Yes, the ideas that the US were founded upon were great.
But at the risk of being labeled an idealist, we can't give up on it--ask Pete Seeger.
He is 93 years old and has been protesting injustice and working for change longer than the vast majority of Yahookans have been alive.

as much as u might expect me to, let me offer a different take.

americans arent nationalistic at all...

we are perhaps arrogant and bullheaded, but not nationalistic,

we are idea-listic.

and our idea is democracy.

so maybe we think pretty highly of ourselves etc etc, but not in the sense of nationalism that we have to rule over other places.... we just want other places to have democracy so that they can have better lives for themselves, and as a direct consequence, have better relations with the rest of the world...

nationalism was like when the germans wanted to take over europe,

or even when the brits talked about the Empire. etc etc,,

america isnt nationalistic, in the traditional sense,

we may have national pride, but at the end of the day we dont yearn to see the stars and stripes flying across the world, simply to see other countries free and happy, and maybe a UN flag flying around the world.

nationalism has given way to globalism, and now your basically either for greater world cooperation and integration, or for something entirely less pleasant.

i think the less intelligence you have the more you are willing to blindly support your country and its policies

the more intelligent you are the more one realizes the ever shrinking nature of the world and technology and how that will result in interconnectedness throughout the globe, thus breaking down these false barriers of nationalism. a country is just an arbitrary boundary in that sense and what really separates us all is culture. one country can have many different cultures and all those cultures can pledge alliegance to that one country. as time goes on i expect the focus to move from countries and boundaries to culture, because i dont see culture as something that is going away. we will always be proud, as humans, of our culture and our roots.

so as time goes on i think (I cant believe im saying this) J-wonder is right in the sense that all these people who now see themselves as separate from one another, i.e. your a canadian, im an american, i think those classifications are going to stop becoming as important as we globalize. nationalism is really a tribal sort of idea. as we expand our definitions past just our own tribes we're going to be really getting into some cool areas of cooperation and interconnection as a species.

A common error slash something that a lot gloss over is that nationalism doesn't have to be negative.
