WANTING to waterboard your kids is normal. Actually DOING SO is not. (However, it IS more normal than it should be.)

So really, it's just a coincidence that he was a soldier.
do you think ANY parents NOT in the military would ever consider waterboarding their kid?

you know this guy saw the technique on a training video or some shit and he just had to bust it out at home

normal shitty parents just bust out a belt or a hard wooden plank of some kind. to say this is a coincidence seems silly.

did you read this part?

Tabor, a soldier at the Lewis-McChord base in Tacoma, Washington, was arrested after being seen walking around his neighbourhood wearing a Kevlar military helmet and threatening to break windows.

what a fucking kook. of course im not BLAMING the military for this but its a simple fact that the military attracts crazy and/or violent and/or weird people.

Did you see my second post on the issue?

What happened was this asshole held his daughter under water, face down, until the water lapped at her forehead and jawline in order to punish her for not being able to recite the alphabet.

Did you see the tape? I don't think thats what the fat guy went through there.

If the story was headlined "Father abuses daughter" it just wouldn't fucking sell man. Put him in a uniform and toss out a buzz word and that'll get everyone good and mad even though shit like this happens every fucking day.

There are just as many whack jobs, nut cases, paedos, freaks, geeks and Republicans as there have always been, only the fear mongers have multiplied...

Edit: I'm not just so jaded that it doesn't bother me any more, I think all child abuser should be prosecuted and punished to the fullest extent of the law and if that doesn't seem fair enough then tell your congressman to write some tougher laws.

I'm sure that non-military persons would do this, too. There has been plenty of media coverage, and tons of youtube videos made available to any interested party. There are alot of really confused, fucked up people in the world.

I have to wonder tho, what made this guy capable of doing something like this. Was it the kind of father he himself had? Or was it the traumas he was exposed to in war? Today's perpetrator is often yesterday's victim, and undamaged people generally don't feel the need to torture others, especially the helpless. As horrific as what this guy did was, a moment to consider compassion for him as well is probably not uncalled for.

Nothing...

He's just an asshole, there are a lot of them out there.

He's a soldier because recruiters are being a bit more lax in who they recruit since the 'all volunteer army' needs more blood spilled on the corporate war machine to keep the gears lubed and as soon as the draft is reinstated, it's all over for the corporate war machine so they'll take a nutjob or two now.

i disagree. the military doesnt attract crazy people, it turns them into crazy people. they undergo all kinds of stress for years. so, you can go ahead and blame the military. or better yet, blame the US govt in general. these examples you speak of probably saw and did some horrifying things in iraq or afghanistan. some things you just cant unsee and you never recover.

+1

My Wife works at a sexual assault centre and I know this method might be heinous, but the amount of trauma that comes from it can't be any greater than the stories my Wife tells me when she comes home.

At the Centre they also work with people who are the abusers (men and women). These people on the other side of the circle of violence wanting to break the chain of their pasts, their own abuses and recover so they can have 'normal' relationships.

I agree with Rev that compassion all around is what will make this healing for those involved. Not that Dad shouldn't get in trouble here or anything.

But I think we all know the prison system isn't to rehabilitate.

I hope that girl is somewhere safe and protected with a group of people who will help her work through this for her own benefit and that the repercussions of this don't only further the circle of pain in her now and future.

The world is filled with horror. It's easy to hate it, maybe even comforting (I'm speaking for myself, here). I couldn't blame someone for being cynical, or frustrated, or enraged. It's just that at the end of the day, hating this awful world isn't going to fix it.
