Niacinamide and Anxiety
Today I start my experimentation with this vitamin on my anxiety, ive herd great things about this stuff and ive tried everything else, ive been on 5 different ssri medications, beta blockers, benzos, tranq's and all kinds of herbs and other crap.
With no insurance, im sure you can imagine the costs my family has racked up in trying to cure me of this. Nothing worked, and after this last time on ssri's and almost dying and doing serious damage to my nerves and brain I had given up, until I read about this vitamin. Took 500mg last night and 500mg this morning, I will continue to take 500mg twice more today, and over the week I will move up the dose. I'll keep updates. I hope this might help with others who are out of options. |

The textbook description of anxiety neurosis exactly matches the symptoms of vitamin B3 (niacin) deficiency: hyperactivity, depression, fatigue, apprehension, headache, and insomnia. It has been shown in animals to work in the brain in ways similar to drugs such as benzodiazepines (Valium-type drugs) that are used to treat anxiety. One study found that niacinamide (not niacin) could help people get through withdrawal from benzodiazepines, which is a common problem. A reasonable amount of niacinamide to take for anxiety, according to some doctors, is up to 500mg four times per day.
It appears that niacinamide has therapeutic properties similar to the benzodiazepines. However, the therapeutic effects of niacinamide likely have little to do with it acting as a ligand for the benzodiazepine receptor. Niacinamide might exert its effects through its modulation of neuro-transmitters that are commonly unbalanced in those areas of the brain associated with anxiety. Niacinamide might also reduce anxiety by shunting more tryptophan toward the production of serotonin and/or by simply correcting a vitamin B3 dependency. The use of niacinamide for extended periods of time appears to be safe, but megadoses can cause sedation, nausea and vomiting. Niacinamide is one of the water-soluble B-complex vitamins. Niacin, or nicotinic acid, is also known as Vitamin B-3. When an amide molecule attaches itself to niacin, it becomes niacinamide. One major difference is that in doses exceeding 50 mg, niacin typically produces flushing of the skin. Niacin and niacinamide also have different applications. It its niacinamide form, it is useful in arthritis and early-onset type I diabetes; niacin is an effective reducer of high cholesterol levels. Niacinamide was first linked to preventing the development of diabetes in experimental animals in the 1950s, a finding confirmed in the 1980s which led to further clinical studies. Niacinamide enhances insulin secretion and increases insulin sensitivity. Evidence points to niacinamide supplements being very effective in preventing type I diabetes from progressing in some patients if given soon enough at the onset of diabetes. It does so primarily by helping restore beta cells. |

Ive moved up to 1000mg 3-4x a day, my nausea has increased a little since I upped the dose, but I got this way when I first started taking it too, im just adjusting to the increase.
I have noticed an improvement on my anxiety, although I havent really put it to the test, it seems promising right now, I will continue to take this, and I will up the dose to 1500mg 3-4x a day next week if I still feel the need to. I wonder if I took this with food, if it would lessen the nausea(im out of pot at the moment, but that usually makes it better) |

I imagine having some food on the stomach would help with the upset stomach. Something to coat the lining so it doesn't get all acidy to just break down some tabs. I'm glad it's showing some promise. Please keep us updated.

I wish it was that easy. It's not. If you've ever had a panic attack, they can be really traumatic. I'm actually at a point where I fear another panic attack more than I fear the original things that brought on the panic in the first place.
Here's my yesterday, which was a pretty bad one for me. Got up, great mood. Had some projects to do, then kick back until we all go to see the fireworks. I was driving home from my parents, when suddenly I just felt "wrong". Light dizziness, inability to focus. I assumed i was having a heart attack or stroke (those are my two big fears). I had to fight myself to make it home. I mean seriously will myself that everything was OK, I'd been down this road before, I'm going to live, just hold it together until I get home, because somehow home is safer. Mainly what got me through it was that I started absent mindedly rubbing the back of my neck with my right hand. It's what I always do when it's panic. And after all that, there's still the niggling thoughts that this is it, the big coronary, the big stroke. After I got home I settled down some, but I kept waiting for it to hit again. And it did a couple of hours later. It's like a wave crashing into you, and no matter how hard you swim, you can't get to the surface. I finally just smoked a bowl and went back to bed until it was time to go to see the fireworks. It just trashed my entire day. And my family's day, because on a family day, Dad was hiding in the bedroom, scared of his own shadow. And loathing myself for it. It's just not as easy as "just not being anxious". I hope you never experience it. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. |

Update here, how have all of you been, good I hope.
I moved up my dose to 1500mg 3-4x a day, BOY do I feel GREAT, new found energy to get things done, a new found focus, and get this, my need to be high as dwindled to me being able to save pot for quite a while. I thank God, for this vitamin and for my new found relief from feeling HORRIBLE all the time .I dont have near as much trouble going into public to do things, nor talking to people to get those things done. However nausea still abounds. Food helps, but upping the dose is gunna make some people a little queezy, some more than others. Those of you who try this, if your deficiency isnt as bad as mine, you might get flushed taking 500mg, let along 1500mg, so be careful as ive herd being flush from niacinamide isnt cool. |

That's great. I wish you could find away around the nausea. Do you feel like the nausea is a worth it trade off?
Good luck. I'm glad to see you're getting results. |

I just upped to 2000mg today, nausea is near nothing and im on an empty stomach, perhaps it just takes time to adjust to.
No weed either. I have a problem with remembering to take it, or being in the mood to swallow large pills. That's my only real complaint. |

So you didn't stop taking them because you were out, because that is kind of how I read that.

this is probably a stupid question/idea as you've probably already thought it...but, can you cut them in half? or smash them up and snort them? omg, i'm just kidding with the last one.

lol couldnt be a worse drip than rolls. But i would assume you could crush em and throw them in some water.
I was at my local food co-op yesterday and while strolling down the herbs/vitamins aisle i came across niacinamide. They were 550mg vegetable capsules. The brand is Solgar. I decided to get some, cause i have mild social anxiety, and thought back to this thread and how well they seemed to be working for you. Edit: this is what i got, capsules are pretty manageable to swallow imo...but im only gonna take like 2 a day http://www.solgar.com/SolgarProducts...e-Capsules.htm

Woah, hold on. Dantastic, does weed do nothing for your anxiety? I'm not prone to it, but around finals time, all it takes to negate anxiety is some smokeage.

In really depends on whether we are talking upper or lower case disorders here....
People have anxiety while others suffer a serious imbalance, there is a difference.
