Did we lost the internet?

I just got a call from my mom who got called by our internet provider and they told her that we had downloaded a pirated game through a torrent site and had made copies of the content and that we would be penalized next time.

We're being watched by our internet providers now? Talk about a rat.

And what shocks me is that they claim we "made copies of the downloaded software", first of all I have made no such copies, second how would they know we made copies without going INTO MY COMPUTER? third, the game they claim I downloaded isn't even out yet, what I downloaded was a beta of the game.

But really, A lot of people claim the internet is our greatest weapon because of the information overflow and easiness with which we can contact others, but what is the internet being turned into? a virtual police state? How deeply are we being watched violating our right to privacy?

Torrents seed as they download, unless you disable it. This counts as "making copies", or more commonly "distributing copies" in the copyright law's eyes. Beta's are also protected by copyright laws...

I got a warning from as a "courtesy" by Verizon. I told them them to stay out of my business and to fuck off both via e-mail and I spoke to someone. The dude I spoke to on the phone said Verizon was contacted by the company, who I assume bait & trapped the seed. Still told them to suck it and not to contact me again regarding my download habits as it no ones biz cept mine - they had no right giving over my IP address. I basically said that my browsing habits are not be revealed as this is a violation of my 4th Amendment Rights.

thats exactly what they said, that the torrent site apparently sent my internet provider a report(yeah right) of the download. I would have told them a few things too, but my mom got the call and all she did was agree with the guy to avoid problems.

I hate how people will just take something up the ass like that, my mom does the same shit, she wont ever argue or get upset with anybody. she says nothing gets done like that.

uh, thats ONLY how things get done in a day and age where the person on the phone is trained to tell you whatever they need to, to get you off the phone.

the trouble is,asmuch as i love torrents and think theyr awesome, they also are quite illegal and i can kinda see why....

and , if u think your 4th amendment rights protect u from an isp watching what ur doing on the internet, keep dreaming...

anyway, these companies (isps ) mostly send out these letters to comply with a provision of t he Digital millenium copyright act... basically if the "comply" with efforts to fight piracy, and notitfy users that they are being watched, then the isp cant be held liable for damages from the using of its network to copy copyrighted material... so in other words, these companies wanna warn u so they dont get sued by the studios, but id be pretty surprised if they actually kick paying members off their services, unless u are a big fish....

sucks tho, dl as much as u can now, bc im sure in 5 years it wont be as easy t o do so
