Laws protecting labor unions were one of the main reasons that unemployment during the Great Depression was so high for so long. Market forces that caused inflated prices in other markets to shrink were forcibly prevented from operating in the labor market due, in large part, to these union protecting laws. Labor, as a result, became increasingly expensive in real terms, and therefore largely unaffordable by business. If you were lucky enough to have a job during the 30's, real wages were great, and rose every year. However, if you were part of the 1/4 of the market that was out of work... well, you were fucked.
