Lightbulb It costs money to be stupid...

Idk about you guys but I'll be damned if I pay anyone to fix something with my car unless the engine is blown or transmission or something else major. I'll be damned if I pay someone to fix something in my house too. If I don't know how to do something I look it up on the web and figure out how to do it MYSELF!

I work in a technical support department and I deal with all walks of life everyday and yet I'm still amazed how dumb people are even when they have the instructions right in front of them!

I ain't no genius but I'll do my best to fix something rather than pay someone to do it for me.

why spend hours doing research and doing your own labour when you can throw a few 20's at someone else and let them do it AND if they're a proper business usually their good work is legally guaranteed... .otherwise you SUE their ass!

Sometimes it's false economy to diy, trying to do skilled work when you've no idea.

Also from a professional point of view it's nauseous when you have to waste time fixing amateur mistakes.

But then again, why pay when you can diy?

Why have sex when you can pay to watch professionals do it?

Why experience a concert when you can pay for the live album?

Why drive a car when you can pay a taxi/bus driver to do it?

Why do anything when you can sell all your time and be someone's slave?

We do it ourselves merc, because experience will guide one through life with much more satisfaction than a "few 20's" will...

You're close to the mindset my wife has..."They do it for a living so they must be better at it", which couldn't be farther from the truth. My brother woks for a home building company and let me tell you, tradespeople fuck stuff up ALL the time, they're just better at covering their mistakes, and they rely on our ignorance to look at something and say "it's done wrong".

Trust me, anything you need done around the house you can do yourself, just as good of a job, and a fraction of the cost.

I'm a huge fan of doing a thing myself. When I get a car I'm going to try and learn to maintain it myself as much as possible, and if I fuck it up at least it's my fault and I learned something.

Me also building a guitar right now, and if I fuck that up I'll kill myself.

Lol I'm a qualified carpenter, plumber, physicist and philosopher. I do quite a lot for myself. But if I need a suit I'll get a tailor to make it.

the thread is about saving money and i think merc's (valid) point is that if you're earning power is high enough it would actually cost you money to perform such menial tasks. opportunity cost my nigger.

example: i live out in the country so i don't have city water we have well water and when that big snowstorm hit last winter our power was out for like five days with close to zero temperature outside. well my pump froze up and split... if i'd had someone come in and fix it it would have been close to a $1000!

instead i knew someone who had an extra pump they gave me. i went to lowes bought new pipe stuff like heat tape and hose clamps and other things i needed and it took me two evenings after work and i got it all put back together...for all of $50-75! it wasn't easy or pleasant but i saved an assload of cash and it was done RIGHT!!
