So, I've been writing for a newspaper this summer and my editor gave me an interesting story to write today. He tells me this morning that some guy bought 20 cases of bottled water down the street at the grocery store and was planning to dump them all out, then return the empties for their deposits which he would then buy liquor with. Come to find out, the guy is on food stamps, which you can't use to buy alcohol or tobacco. BUT, you can use them to buy bottled water and to pay the bottle deposits, which you can then redeem in cash. The store employees said this happens all the time, usually every day that fresh funds are distributed.

This guy bought 20 cases with 24 bottles each at a price of $4.34 after tax including the deposit, for a total bill of $86.80. He then poured all the water down the drain behind the store and redeemed a total of $24 in deposit money.

unemployment is a little out of control too

I know a lot of people that willingly go on unemployment. As in they don't make any attempt to look for employment, and actually turn down opportunities that dont net more than their unemployment makes.

yeah those sons of bitches ruin it for people like my mom who got laid off work at the age of 60, she has no retirement or anything, without unemployment money she'd be homeless and hungry.

there isn't much hope for a 60 year old woman to find a decent job, at least not around here.

at least next month she will be eligible for social security benefits because she is a widow

an article in my paper says 20% of people on this island are on food stamps. That's one in five. Chances are, lots of those people are alcoholic and creative.

the real problem are the stores. here, you aren't allowed to eat at restaurants or buy prepared food, but the grocery stores find a way around it, like making food and then refrigerating it so its not technically hot. its all about profit, they don't give a fuck where the money comes from.

in all honesty, if i had come up with that idea i would probably be scamming the EBT all day until i could pick up an ounce.
