'Tarantula Invasion' Has Northern Britain On Edge

A pair of Chilean Rose tarantulas were found separately in backyards in northern Britain recently, and people are getting nervous. So what's the big deal about a couple of furry spiders? They spit hairs into people's eyes and blind them.

The man who captured one of the spiders, an inspector for the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, told the Telegraph about the tarantula he caught in a woman's garden:

Derek Hampson, an inspector for the animal welfare charity, said: "We advised her to keep it under the plant pot until we arrived. They can quite happily go a week without food, so it was quite content.

"It got a bit aggressive when I picked it up. I wore safety goggles as these creatures can spit hairs which can blind you."

The Chilean Rose tarantula, or Grammostola rosea, can live up to 20 years and grow to be about 10 centimeters wide. And if you mess with them, you could quickly lose your eyesight and be covered in piss:

Before biting or releasing hairs, they will "Musk" the assailant with a mix of urine, feces, and other fluids. This is a foul-smelling mixture. The fluid is ejected from the hind of the spider.

Yeah, that sounds pretty awful. As if losing your vision weren't bad enough, they'll piss and shit all over you, too.

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the Iranian leader, says Paul the Octopus, the sea creature that correctly predicted the outcome of World Cup games, is a symbol of all that is wrong with the western world.

He claims that the octopus is a symbol of decadence and decay among "his enemies".
Paul, who lives at the Oberhausen Sea Life Centre, in Germany, won the hearts of the Spanish by predicting their World Cup victory.

He became an international star after predicting the outcome of all seven German World Cup matches accurately.

However, the Iranian president accused the octopus of spreading "western propaganda and superstition." Paul was mentioned by Mr Ahmadinejad on various occasions during a speech in Tehran at the weekend.

"Those who believe in this type of thing cannot be the leaders of the global nations that aspire, like Iran, to human perfection, basing themselves in the love of all sacred values," he said.

Wouldn't the credence the first bold statement gives to the octopus's 'words' dispose of him as a leader based on the second bold statement?

'Cause uh.... believing in it is believing, and thinking it's 'correct' or 'wrong' is a totally different net of squid. Or is he saying it's only OK for Iranians to believe a octopus can prophecy, albeit with an 'incorrect message', but the rest of the world leaders are prohibited from such tom foolery?

It flicks hairs off it's back, my mate had one as a pet years ago (horrid little fuckers imo) and it covered his hand in tiny bee sting like welts, from teh hairs occasionally, when he reached in to feed it. Woudln't fancy getting them in the face/eyes.
