Asheron's Call is a pay to play MMORPG originally released in November 1999. AC has been receiving patches and additional content every month since. The land of Dereth is steeped in lore and mystery.

Why am I here telling you about this?

To be quite honest, I would like to see some new faces in game. I also don't ever want this game to die, so I'm doing my part to help Turbine get some more subs.


What sets this game away from the pack? How has it lasted over 10 years?

AC is an original game. Everything about it sets it apart.

Lets start simply with the monarchy system. No guilds. Monarchies. It is a patron/vassal relationship. Player A swears allegiance to Player B. Player A is a vassal and Player B is the Patron. Whenever Player A earns experience points through hunting or questing, extra experience is created and given to the Patron. Patrons generally provide equipment and buffs to vassals, but most importantly, guidance and support - the world is immense. At the top of the chain is the Monarch.

Combat is player skill driven. There are three main types of characters. A melee (sword, axe, mace, dagger, unarmed, staff spear and shield, or in the case of Two Handed Weapons - No shield), Ranged (Bow, Crossbow or Thrown Weapons) and Caster. The game provides PROJECTILE PHYSICS. You're damn right, one can dodge spells and arrows simply by moving out of the way.

The video below is an archer fighting multiple people at once and winning. Gameplay is fast paced and action packed. Learning to Player Kill properly is an art.


The video below is a mage, a damn good one at that fighting multiple players and winning. Notice how one can slide their character while casting. This is referred to as your "cast". Perfecting a cast important.

Notice later on, he is blocked inside a tent. Player collision is awesome.


Risks and Rewards are a vital part of the PK experience. In AC there are real penalties for dying, and real rewards for killing. When you die in AC you will be returned to the Lifestone your soul is attuned to and you will accrue a 5% vitae penalty and lose some items you were carrying.

Lifestones - there are hundreds of them on this seamless world. Choose one you like and set up there.

Losing items - Yes, you lose items in your inventory. Hopefully you are smart and are carrying high value items of no importance to you to cover the items you do not want to drop. CLARIFICATION - If you're smart you will never lose your items, you will lose what we call Death Items (Items you get for the sole purpose of losing). But if you do fuck up and die, anything you drop goes to the person who killed you if he chooses to loot you (which they will). If you die you can go back to your body and retrieve everything you lost, assuming they were not looted.

Vitae - Vitae is a reduction to skills, stats, HP, Stamina and Mana. 5% is awarded to you for each death. Vitae can be removed by earning experience by killing monsters. It generally takes about 2-5 minutes to "burn your vitae" after a death to return to normal.

PK Death - If a player kills you, you are unkillable for 5 minutes thereafter. Buff up, burn vitae and get back at them.


There are 275 levels in AC. Leveling to 100 can be done in a couple days if you are experienced. A week or two if not. 100-200 may take months.


There are several non-player killer servers and one PK-Only server called "Darktide". Darktide is where it is at. Clans control dungeons, towns, areas and such. Fighting for land rights is a constant battle. There are no factions on DT. It is all free for all (don't kill your clan mates). There are no chat barriers like WoW. Feel free to talk shit to the person you killed. Laugh at him when you take his weapon or armor. Or be nice and sell it back to him.
